The Hollow Places by T. Kingfisher is $1.99 at Amazon US.

Quote:
A young woman discovers a strange portal in her uncle’s house, leading to madness and terror in this gripping new novel from the author of the “innovative, unexpected, and absolutely chilling” (Mira Grant, Nebula Award–winning author) The Twisted Ones.

Pray they are hungry.

Kara finds the words in the mysterious bunker that she’s discovered behind a hole in the wall of her uncle’s house. Freshly divorced and living back at home, Kara now becomes obsessed with these cryptic words and starts exploring this peculiar area—only to discover that it holds portals to countless alternate realities. But these places are haunted by creatures that seem to hear thoughts…and the more one fears them, the stronger they become.

It Waits on the Top Floor by Ben Farthing $0.99 at Amazon US.

I love the cover. It would fit right in on an 80's horror shelf.

Quote:
The tower appeared overnight, but it wants to keep you forever.

Thursday night, it was a dirt lot.

Friday morning, it was a 60-story skyscraper.

A tech billionaire wants the building’s secrets for herself. She hires a team to reverse-engineer the overnight construction. But she knows more than she’s letting on.

A curious 9-year-old decides there’s treasure inside, and goes exploring. His terrified dad chases close behind. Inside, the facade of an empty office building is quickly shattered. Ghostly figures stalk the explorers. The walls themselves are hungry. And something is waiting on the top floor.

Flesh by Richard Laymon
Amazon US $0.99

Quote:
No one in town has ever seen anything like it: a slimy, mobile tube of glistening yellow flesh with dull, staring eyes and an obscene, probing mouth. But the real horror is not what it looks like, or what it does when it invades your flesh—but what it makes you do to others.

Does anyone else have formatting issues when you read this one? For example, spacing issues? Or has it since been updated?

The publisher is Amazon (47North), so you'd think they would know better. But it dates back to 2013, so maybe they were still figuring out formatting issues when working with older file formats.

I could report the formatting issues, but I want to avoid that because that sometimes gets a book removed from sale.

I bought the book in 2017 and convert all my books to ePub, where I can fix issues like this.

But just now, I opened Flesh on the Kindle app on my phone. There's a space between every paragraph. I've attached a screenshot.

Your device is a Nook. Don't you follow the same process as me? Do you need help fixing the spacing?

Whoops. I use a Kindle Paperwhite now. I guess I should update my profile.

The book looks weird on my Paperwhite. I think my version used justified paragraphs, and that resulted in lots of space between words. I should remove it and download it again in case they fixed it.

I was converting things for a while, but I got used to the convenience of they way the Kindle handles "official" Kindle ebooks as opposed to "docs."

Composite Creatures by Caroline Hardaker is $1.99 on Amazon.com
Dystopian fiction, but the top shelf on Goodreads is Horror.
Quote:
In a society where self-preservation is as much an art as a science, Norah and Arthur are learning how to co-exist in their new little world. Though they hardly know each other, everything seems to be going perfectly—from the home they're building together to the ring on Norah's finger.

But survival in this world is a tricky thing, the air is thicker every day and illness creeps fast through the body. And the earth is becoming increasingly hostile to live in. Fortunately, Easton Grove is here for that in the form of a perfect little bundle to take home and harvest. You can live for as long as you keep it—or her—close.

If it's an official book, I thought Amazon used .KFX that is supposed to greatly improve the typesetting?

I'm not familiar with Kindle, but on Kobo and Nook you can set the justification to fully justified, ragged right or off(Kobo)/auto (Nook).

If you have a book that is already justified and you have your reader set to justified instead of auto/off, you will get weird spacing sometimes.

Screams from the Void by Anne Tibbets is $0.99 at Amazon US.

Quote:
For two years in deep space, the freighter Demeter and a small crew have collected botanical life from other planets. It's a lesson in patience and hell. Mechanics Ensign Raina is ready to jump ship, if only because her abusive ex is also aboard, as well as her overbearing boss. It's only after a foreign biological creature sneaks aboard and wreaks havoc on the ship and crew that Raina must find her grit - and maybe create a gadget or two - to survive...that is, if the crew members don't lose their sanity and turn on each other in the process.

Whisper Down the Lane by Clay Chapman is $2.99 at Amazon US.

Quote:
A pulse-pounding, true-crime-based horror novel inspired by the McMartin preschool trial and Satanic Panic of the ’80s.

Richard doesn't have a past. For him, there is only the present: a new marriage, a first chance at fatherhood, and a quiet life as an art teacher in Virginia. Then the body of a ritualistically murdered rabbit appears on his school's playground, along with a birthday card for him. But Richard hasn't celebrated his birthday since he was known as Sean...

In the 1980s, Sean was five years old when his mother asked him if his favorite teacher had ever been inappropriate with him. In the course of one conversation, Sean was led to tell a lie. When school administrators, cops, and therapists questioned him, he told another. And another. And another. Each fueled the fire of a moral panic that engulfed the nation—and destroyed the lives of everyone around him. Now, thirty years later, someone is here to tell Richard that they know what Sean did. But who would even know that these two are one and the same?
I grew up in SoCal and remember when the McMartin preschool nonsense was on the news every day.

There's a very good HBO movie that tells the true McMartin Preschool story called Indictment. Worth a watch.
