Below is the blurb:
An unlikely world history from the bestselling author of Cod and The Basque History of the World

In his fifth work of nonfiction, Mark Kurlansky turns his attention to a common household item with a long and intriguing history: salt. The only rock we eat, salt has shaped civilization from the very beginning, and its story is a glittering, often surprising part of the history of humankind. A substance so valuable it served as currency, salt has influenced the establishment of trade routes and cities, provoked and financed wars, secured empires, and inspired revolutions. Populated by colorful characters and filled with an unending series of fascinating details, Salt is a supremely entertaining, multi-layered masterpiece.
I bought this the last time it went on sale, and it is one of my favorite non-fics. Highly recommended.

I'm on Verso's mailing list, but I missed seeing this--I usually read the titles of the messages and if I don't see anything that catches my attention, I move on. I'll have to start drilling down the messages now, since you made this good find.

Verso's advertising copy says that you can get "a book with an ebook." That might be misleading to some people--you don't have to buy the paper-based book in order to get the free ebook. There will be a box, giving the book's title, with two tabs at the top. The default tab is labelled "book." The other tab is labelled "ebook." Select it if the (free) ebook is the only thing that you want. If you only get the freebie, checkout is a breeze!

Verso is, by its own self-description, a "radical press." It is leftist. I don't know anything about this book or its author. I don't know what, if anything, will be in the book that reflects a radical leftist view. I am not making any kind of statement about my personal political views, only giving information. I would make the same kind of statement if I knew the publisher was radical right wing.

Great post, especially from one who has just become a poster! I will try to remember to check my messages from Verso, the remainder of the month, to catch the rest of their weekly freebies.

Thanks! Verso will be giving away an ebook every 3 days for the remainder of the month, as part of this 'back to school' promotion. Good that you clarify how to get just the free ebook, it is indeed not immediately apparent.
