I've started reading Ring Shout by P. Djèlí Clark. I'm still early in the story, but I very much like Clark's writing.

The book seems like it would make a good companion to Lovecraft Country (also recommended). Neither seems derivative of the other. But they explore similar themes, using horror tropes to explore the true horrors of racism in the early 20th century.

It is not on sale and $11 for a novella is very steep. But I'll be sure to share when I see it go on sale again.

Also, I just finished watching the HBO adaptation of Lovecraft Country and thought it was fantastic. Overall, it was probably better than the book.

I also think it is a blessing in disguise that the show was cancelled. The first season is complete, adapts the whole book (and expands on it) and has an ending. Trying to continue the show would probably have caused it to jump the shark pretty quickly.

Actually, I did read The Ballad of Black Tom, but didn't get much out of it. I read it on a flight and maybe didn't give it the attention it deserved, so I've been thinking about re-reading it.

Incidentally, that book is $3.99 at Amazon US. Not sure if that is a sale or regular price. But it's a better deal than Ring Shout's $11 price tag.

I haven't read it, but I did read his Summer of Night and really liked it.

It's funny you'd say that, as that is exactly my reaction and my plan: To read it one more time.

Zoinks! That does sound pretty bad.

I don't mind reading books that disagree with my politics if they otherwise good books. But it sounds like Dan Simmons made the same mistake in Flashback that Steve Alten made in Shell Game: he tied the storyline so closely to current events that it was quickly outdated.
