Well hey, if shlocky nautical horror is your bag, The Creeping Kelp by William Meikle is also $0.99. Worth it for the title alone, but here's a synopsis anyway:

Some seaweed, a jellyfish and some material brought back from the Peabodie expedition to Antarctica. An innoccuous enough blend you might think. But when a storm in the North Atlantic frees a sample that has been dormant inside an old wreck, the new creature finds that it is hungry. I have that one, but have not yet read it. I plan to, since I think he's tackling some of the horrors from my favorite horror writer: William Hope Hodgson. (The one you mention may be schlocky, but it sounds like an intestinally juicy read. )

Peabodie, on the other hand, sounds remarkably like Lovevraft or Derleth.

Meikle, as you know, explores different aspects within horror.

Yes, it's quite necessary that they quickly lose their minds. If the incubation period was - say - years, then we would have one hell of a boring story.

Less than an hour speeds things along nicely and incurs many more deaths.

Five stars for the one hour or less.

I don't know. The greatest horror says something about our current fears: Godzilla and the atomic age.

I think (if done right) there could be a good horror story based on a slowly spreading problem, with the people in power arguing about its reality, then arguing about whether we could do anything about it as the problem grows worse and worse and worse until it is too late.

Think about how in The Day After, the first chunk of the movie showed people going about their daily lives while in the background there were news reports of a building conflict.

And of course there is the This Is Fine strip.
