Yes, I work for the US Army, as an IT Project Manager; managing enterprise IT projects throughout the Pacific Theater. The job is very satisfying but also very stressful. It does, however pay quite well, when the Government is not shut down!

What I'm struggling with is what happens in places like Afghanistan. I mean what are the options? a) just carry on 'cos it will sort itself out b) stop all operations, unman any checkpoints etc c) surrender to the Taliban

I know the only real option is (a) and I'm aware they've reached an agreement so that would be the right choice. But it does put the guys on the ground in the position of second guessing the government which is not a comfortable thing in a democracy.

Earlier today there was a big shooting incident in a shopping centre in Alphen aan den Rijn. Six people were killed, including the killer, and four people are in critical condition in hospital. Can't remember anything like this happening in the Netherlands before. This news makes me really sad .
