Oh, wow! Today's Audible Daily Deal is Cocaine Blues by Kerry Greenwood (narrated by Stephanie Daniel). This clever, sexy mystery features the debut of the one and only Phryne Fisher.

From Goodreads:
Quote:
Honorable Miss Phryne Fisher solves theft in 1920s London High Season society, and sets her clever courage to poisoning in Melbourne Australia. She - of green eyes, diamant garters and outstanding outfits - is embroiled in abortion, death, drugs, communist cabbies - plus erotic Russian dancer Sasha de Lisse. The steamy end finds them trapped in Turkish baths.
$1.95 today only.

Get a free professionally-narrated copy of the Edwin A. Abbott classic Flatland: A Romance of Many Dimensions. This comes courtesy of University Press Audiobooks.

The narrator is Douglas R. Pratt. He "has narrated over twenty audiobook titles for a number of companies, including several for University Press Audiobooks: The War of 1812, Titan II, and U.S. Foreign Policy and Defense Strategy (forthcoming)." He's narrated a lot of audiobooks that are available at Audible. I scanned over his works and the ratings of the audiobooks which he narrates (which might give you an idea about the quality of his narrations) and they ranged from fair to excellent. Interestingly, there does not appear to be an audio narration of Flatland by him available at Audible.

Here's some more stuff that University Press Audiobooks says about the title:
Now available for free download, this new, unabridged edition of FLATLAND is faithful to Abbott's own second, revised edition. This narration provides a clear, intelligent rendition for the modern ear.

FLATLAND: A ROMANCE OF MANY DIMENSIONS was written by Abbott and first published in 1884 under the pseudonym, A. Square. It has gone on to become a perennial classic.

Here's where to go to get the freebie.

$3.95 -- Bunker Hill -- Nathaniel Philbrick/ Chris Sorensen --> 13.0 hrs/ R-4.2 --> history

Quote:
Bunker Hill: A City, a Siege, a Revolution

Whispersync: Audible ($3.95) | Kindle ($10.99)

Nathaniel Philbrick, the bestselling author of In the Heart of the Sea and Mayflower, brings his prodigious talents to the story of the Boston battle that ignited the American Revolution.

Boston in 1775 is an island city occupied by British troops after a series of incendiary incidents by patriots who range from sober citizens to thuggish vigilantes. After the Boston Tea Party, British and American soldiers and Massachusetts residents have warily maneuvered around each other until April 19, when violence finally erupts at Lexington and Concord. In June, however, with the city cut off from supplies by a British blockade and Patriot militia poised in siege, skirmishes give way to outright war in the Battle of Bunker Hill. It would be the bloodiest battle of the Revolution to come, and the point of no return for the rebellious colonists.

Philbrick brings a fresh perspective to every aspect of the story. He finds new characters, and new facets to familiar ones. The real work of choreographing rebellion falls to a thirty-three year old physician named Joseph Warren who emerges as the on-the-ground leader of the Patriot cause and is fated to die at Bunker Hill. Others in the cast include Paul Revere, Warren's fiancee, the poet Mercy Scollay, a newly recruited George Washington, the reluctant British combatant General Thomas Gage and his more bellicose successor William Howe, who leads the three charges at Bunker Hill and presides over the claustrophobic cauldron of a city under siege as both sides play a nervy game of brinkmanship for control.

With passion and insight, Philbrick reconstructs the revolutionary landscape - geographic and ideological - in a mesmerizing narrative of the robust, messy, blisteringly real origins of America.

A Patriot's History of the United States

Quote:
Whispersync: Audible ($3.47) | Kindle ($20.99)

Note: the WS version is the 10th anniv edition and contains an additional 5.6 hours

Here is the revised and updated 10th anniversary edition of the number-one New York Times best seller.

Over the past decade, A Patriot's History of the United States has become the definitive conservative history of our country, correcting the biases of historians and other intellectuals who downplay the greatness of America's patriots. Professors Schweikart and Allen have now revised, updated, and expanded their book, which covers America's long history with an appreciation for the values that made this nation uniquely successful.
Since the liberal revolution of the '60s and '70s, American history books have been biased toward the negative. They overemphasize America's racism, sexism, and bigotry while downplaying the greatness of her patriots. As a result, more emphasis is placed on Harriet Tubman than on George Washington, more on the internment of Japanese-Americans during World War II than on D-day or Iwo Jima, more on the dangers we faced from Joseph McCarthy than those we faced from Josef Stalin.

This book offers a long-overdue acknowledgment of America's true and proud history. The authors reexamine America's discovery, founding, and development with an appreciation for the principles of public virtue, personal liberty, and private property that have made this nation so uniquely successful.

How strict is Audible on the one per person for the Groupon deal? I have two Amazon accounts, both in my name. (I listen to fairly explicit romance, so I don't want to open an account under a family member's name.)

FREE -- The Three Musketeers -- Alexandre Dumas/ John Lee --> 23.6 hrs/ R-4.3 --> classic

Quote:
The Three Musketeers --> D'Artagnan (book 1 of 5)

Whispersync: Audible (free) | Kindle (free)

Mixing a bit of seventeenth-century French history with a great deal of invention, Alexandre Dumas tells the tale of young D'Artagnan and his musketeer comrades, Porthos, Athos, and Aramis. Together they fight to foil the schemes of the brilliant, dangerous Cardinal Richelieu, who pretends to support the king while plotting to advance his own power. Bursting with swirling swordplay, swooning romance, and unforgettable figures---including the seductively beautiful but deadly femme fatale, Milady, and D'Artagnan's equally beautiful love, Madame Bonacieux---The Three Musketeers continues, after a century and a half of continuous publication, to define the genre of swashbuckling romance and historical adventure.
Quote:
Audible Editor Reviews

Of course you've heard of the three famous swordsmen, but did you know that the novel is really funny, as well as replete with romance and adventure? John Lee does, and his narration plays up all three attributes to great effect. For those who need a reminder, Dumas's classic adventure presents the escapades of three of King Louis's musketeers, Athos, Porthos, and Aramis, plus D'Artagnan (a musketeer in training) as they foil a few of Cardinal Richelieu's many devious plots. Amid much swordplay, they actually utter the famous line: "All for one and one for all." Lee struggles a bit with accents and characterizations early in the production. His hesitations disappear after a few chapters, however, and he gives fine voice to the rest of the madcap tale.

Quote:
The Abbey: A Story of Discovery

Whispersync: Audible ($10.58) | Kindle ($14.99)

In the tradition of the spiritual classics The Shack and The Screwtape Letters comes a captivating and poignant debut novel from the revered Jesuit priest and New York Times best-selling author of Jesus and The Jesuit Guide to (Almost) Everything.

A divorced single mom, Anne can barely cope with life and struggles to make sense of the death of her young son.

A former architect with a promising career, Mark works as a handyman and wonders how his life got off track.

The abbot of the Abbey of Saints Philip and James, Father Paul sometimes questions whether he made the right decision in secluding himself so thoroughly from the world.

At this Pennsylvania abbey, this unlikely trio will discover the answers they seek - a miracle of hope and understanding that bears witness to the power of God to bring healing and wholeness to our lives.

Written with the compassion, insight, and warmth of his previous best sellers - Jesus, Between Heaven and Mirth, and The Jesuit Guide to (Almost) Everything - Father James Martin's debut novel is infused with deep spiritual wisdom, wry humor, and loving grace. Through his characters' struggles, questions, and crises, we see firsthand how God uses our worries, anger, doubts, prayers, failures, and longings to help us complete ourselves and feel wholly loved.
