5.Download and install the current version of Branch Delay's factory firmware jail break.
This step installs two files, our signature certificate and a 'Jail Broken' document.
If the 'Jail Broken' document is not on your Kindle in the /documents folder after the completion of this step, then the certificate is not on it either!
If this happens to you, stop here and post about the problem, there is no reason to continue if the JB is now missing.

this is me right here: pw3 downgrade success. but could not find the 'Jail Broken' doc how should i continue to get to jailbroken kindle level ???

Are you using a Mac?
How did you go about downloading the archive you are suppose to install in this step?

yes mac it is!!! just downloaded it according your guide from the 'Kindle Factory Image Generic Jailbreak' post

You have a couple of choices.
With your current downloader options ('safe downloads') you Mac is destroying the functionality of the archive.

You could change the options.
or
You could open a terminal on the Mac and use either wget or curl to download the archive.
(both are standard on a Kindle, surely they are standard on a $$$$$$$$$$$ Mac)

The point is, the download needs to stay as a *.gz file. The mac automagically unpacks the file for you, and THAT'S THE WRONG BEHAVIOR in this case. If you change that "safe download" option (I'm not real familiar with it, despite being a maccy myself), you could re-download, and then turn the option back on again. 99% of other instances won't be bothered by the automatic unpacking.

You need to put a *.gz file into the kindle directory.

hahaha yesss they are on my $$$$$ mac from 2013 so i guess i just redownload the archive in the fashion just mentioned, replace the one i downloaded before with it and let you know!!!! guess the same goes for step 6

may take me a bit from work though

It is not that hard:
Open terminal
Navigate to directory where you want the download to land
Enter (cut&paste is ok):

wget https://www.mobileread.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=150210&d=1468542166

Thanks for (re?) posting that command here, knc1. I'm about to jailbreak an Oasis, and will need that command in 20 or 30 minutes (between other tasks).

edit: I must have already turned off the "safe download" thing, cuz I had no problem. I stopped after step 7, not installing any packages. I just wanted to *have* the jailbreak, in case I later wanted something. Oh, and I created the bock-over-air updates folder, to stay away from 5.8.8 -- just in case.

You should probably choose one of the customer firmware builds in the step #7 spoiler.
Because you are still running the "production line test" firmware.
If you forget about that, you will end up wondering whatever you do add-in does not work.

Something prior 5.8.8 (which I don't have in that list anyway )

Oh, I did. I started with v5.8.1.0.1-2990510001 (before I did anything) and installed 5.8.5 before quitting your procedural steps.

OK, I probably misread your post.

So you have our signature certificate installed and the little files that auto-reinstalls it after each update.
That is a good stopping point, you haven't added anything that would interfere with anything you decide to do in the future.

Since you mostly use your Kindle to read things, you might what to add KOreader someday.
Then you wouldn't be stuck with "Amazon format" things to read.
And if you also add KPVbooklet, that will automate the book opening -
Just tap on a book or document, KPVbooklet will open the desired reader (stock or KOreader or HackedupReader).

That would probably be the most you would actually use.

Unless you want the current knitting pattern as the screensaver.

Hi! I would like to update my 'Kindle 3' library from my computer over Wi-Fi.

I tried registering my device and using the kindle desktop app but it put ads on my device.

Is there a KUAL add on or something that will allow me to update my library over Wi-fi?

I have KOreader on my Paperwhite and I've found it convenient because of the inverse text for night reading. I thought KOreader wasn't really compatible for Oasis though -- I suppose I was under a misapprehension though. I may install it.

For screensavers I prefer my own rather than the book cover. Occasionally I'll edit the .png files in my computer folder and move them over to keep the variety going.

As far as user selected fonts go, I will also have to investigate. I'm pretty satisfied with Bookerly but if I see something I like I shall put forth the effort!
