No. Just that much confusion could have been avoided if Linux had been specified at the start.

So they suggest to use the plugin's config dialog to create a key from a working and registered ADE installation. So I took up the key from my working Windows installation, and the plugin doesn't show any errors about this key -- but still it fails to take off the DRM under both Windows and Linux, anyway.

So yeah... I guess I will have to register a github account, too, after all...
Use the ACSM input plugin for calibre no need for ADE at all.

This plugin is a replacement for Adobe Digital Editions (ADE) which allows you to turn an ACSM file into an EPUB or PDF just like ADE would.
I use this with Linux and it works.

Linux has come a long way since I started using it a few years ago.

For how I use a PC, Linux could completely replace Windows, except I can't get Kindle4PC to run on Fedora and I don't want to set up a virtual machine.

For most people who check emails and go online, Linux would work at least as well as Windows.

Indeed. Also, I couldn't resist inverting the joke about how the solution to many Windows problems is "install Linux."

Hey, thanks for the tip! :-) I didn't know about this plugin, and it seems to work -- generally. However, the book for which I've started this "quest" stays stubbornly DRM-ed, and I still can't open it from Calibre... :-(
I will ask on the noDRM github when I find some time later...

And to the others, if you read my last two posts, you will see I have already said this is not working on neither Linux nor Windows, and that I already have a Windows VM with a working installation of ADE.
In my opinion, we should fight against DRM, especially if it does not have cross-platform support (like Adobe doesn't), instead of ditching each other's OS choices. No DRM, no problem.

Part of the problem is that as Linux has improved, so has Windows.

I like Linux, but as most PCs come with Windows preinstalled, I have a hard time justifying replacing a good OS that runs everything I need with a good OS that runs most of what I need. And I think that is Linux' biggest hurdle.

Another problem with Linux is all the different builds and the repositories can be garbage. We've read of lots of Calibre problems because of getting it from the repository. Good idea, really port in execution.

Since when I installed the ACSM input plugin (other than the DRM removal plugin) I don't need Windows anymore. (at least for ebook)

The only reason why I could need Windows is to convert into KFX, but now I seldom use my Kindle Paperwhite.

PS: let people use their preferred OS

Can the ASCM + DeDRM combination decrypt DRM-ed files without ever having to install ADE and extract a key from it? (I only need a 'yes' or 'no'; I don't need an explanation.)

Yes, ADE is not needed to set it up.

Do you run into it crashing at startup or it can't connect to the network? Winetricks and Play On Linux make it easy to install Kindle4PC 1.16 or 1.17 on Linux without crashing but at least on Ubuntu it can't connect to the network because of a missing ssl certificate. At least on Ubuntu 20.04 this fixed it for me:

Might lead you somewhere for Fedora!

I couldn't even get Kindle installed using Wine or Winetricks. PlayOnLinux helped there. I now have it installed, but again, Kindle can't connect to the internet. Hey, it's progress.

The link was all Greek to me. But I'll search for 'add ssl certificate to Fedora or go to the Fedora forums.
