I had thought it was some kind of knotted rafia design - then tonoight I suddenly recognised dog eyes in it!

I'm not sure whether I'm more disturbed by that or by Ivanleterrible's upsidedown Marc avatar

I frequently wake up somewhere hanging upside down by my shoelaces. There's a good chance Yvanleterrible came on a pub-crawl with me and pshrynk sometime, and woke up to my "upsidedown frown" disembodied head asking him if he had $2 for train fare, and the image kind of stuck with him.
