I read the first one in that series as an ebook after my dad raved about the series. I found it far too derivative of Connie Willis, which annoyed me. I haven't read any of the others.

I'm a Connie Willis fan, and I would reconsider Passage, if I were you. It was my least favorite novel of hers. I agree with Harry that she can be inconsistent. Doomsday Book, despite some problems, is one of my all-time favorite novels. To Say Nothing of the Dog is a lot of fun if you're familiar with Three Men in a Boat. I tend to like her stories and novellas better than her novels, for the most part.
Edited to get back on topic: I've never listened to any of Connie Willis's works, but this discussion made curious about the audio version of To Say Nothing of the Dog. I can be picky about readers. Anyone have any opinions on Steven Crossley? Last edited by ElspethB; 06-17-2016 at 09:02 AM. |

I've started listening to What Angels Fear by C.S. Harris (narrated by Davina Porter). I have the first few chapters under my belt and am enjoying it immensely. It's a murder mystery whose action takes place in England during the reign of King George III. The narration is excellent, and I'm immediately liking the fellow, Viscount Sebastian St. Cyr, who is accused of not only a young lady's murder, but also of the murder of one of the officials who comes to arrest him. He's innocent of both charges, of course, and this one has me wondering how he will ever extract himself from this quagmire.
This is the first in a series featuring Sebastian St. Cyr, and if the quality with which it has begun continues unabated throughout the book, it won't be the last of the series I read. |

Sounds interesting, Tom. Especially since I know Davina Porter is an excellent narrator. By all means, let us know what your final verdict is.

I've listened to several books read by Steven Crossley and while he's not in my pantheon, he's still quite good. |

Have I told you lately that I love you, issybird? Anyone who correctly uses pantheon is in mine.
To keep on topic, currently listening to Sharpe's Eagle while I swim, and The Curse of Challion by Lois McMaster Bujold while driving/walking/gardening. |

I expect them to be. Some authors one can count on.
![]() Speaking of which, I just pre-ordered Martin Walker's newest Bruno Chief of Police book, which should be out Tuesday. The readings by Robert Ian Mackenzie should be excellent. He's done the others in the series, and I've quite enjoyed them. This is definitely a favourite series. |

Just finished listening to "Enchanted April" by Elizabeth von Arnim in eleven parts on the Classic Tales Podcast, Host and narrator B.J. Harrison is a professional voice talent who has worked with Audible and does an excellent job with this once a week podcast. He is currently reading "Return of Tarzan" but the older episodes are available.

Summer starts tomorrow, but I anticipated it this weekend. After nine dreary Aubreyless Maturin-free months, I hit play on The Far Side of the World, read by Simon Vance.

Recently started the third in the Mr. Mercedes detective trilogy by Stephen King, End of Watch, narrated by Will Patton. The previous two have been excellent, and this one is shaping up to be just as good.
