Ah thanks very much for the advice. Glad I asked! I'm running into a problem right now. factory_KOA_5.7.4_initial from both Primary and Secondary download links are not matching the MD5s alongside them. Yikes. I'm downloading in chrome, should I try a different browser or something?
edit -- I'm trying in firefox. So far I tried Primary twice in chrome and Secondary once in chrome. I also searched and found this from knc1: https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sh...postcount=1279 I might be doing the same problem but I still don't really understand. I'm using an MD5 checking program, clicking and dragging the .bin in to get the footprint, copying that footprint into notepad. Then I repeat for the .bin.md5, get that footprint, paste it into notepad as well and compare. They are different. Am I doing something wrong with the .bin.md5? knc1 will correct me if I'm wrong (I only jailbroke once) but I think the bin.md5 file is TEXT. You are meant to compare its contents with the output of your md5 program.

Oooh okay it worked.
So basically what you do is open the md5 one in notepad. I had no clue. It gave me the reference mD5 in notepad and it does match up. Why do we need to download the md5 thing anyway? Couldn't the reference md5 just be pasted right below the download link? That was confusing for a lay-person who initially thought I was supposed to check both files with an mD5 checking program. Just letting yall know. But apparently it's not much of a problem for most people. ![]() Just to confirm: For step #7, Oasis users should manually install customer_KOA_5.7.4_update -- right? Well, it could be helpful if they changed the file's name to "bin.md5.txt" but ....
Yeah, I was confused at first too. Didn't try running the md5er on it, tho! |

Aaaaaaaand I found the answer: I quickly forgot what mrpi meant... https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sh...&postcount=226 You install it with the ";log mrpi" typed into the search feature. Last edited by lllusion; 04-06-2017 at 11:11 PM. |

I have a KT3. Everything seemed to be working fine until I got to step 5. The ;installHtml appeared to work but I then plugged back in to check if the "jailbroken" document was within the documents folder -- I don't see it. I decided to stop and report this before I moved forward with the step 6. Not bricked, I just want to be cautious
Edit: On page 109 I read about someone with a similar issue using a Mac (like me). It was suggested they download the .tar file using terminal curl (I'm now looking into how to do that). This is likely my issue. I will update. Edit: Downloaded with the .tar with Firefox and it worked. Last edited by jojohnst; 04-08-2017 at 03:05 AM. |

It is the "safe download" related option in the default downloader that is destroying the usefulness of the package.
The option can be changed by the user. But now that you are past that speed bump, you will probably never in your life have to download something that the option would harm. So don't change the option now. |

Dammit. Stupid me and not reading...
knc1, please add the sidenote to NOT to upgrade to 5.8.8 if we want to jailbreak. I accidentally reset my PW3, and it upgraded to 5.8.8 before I noticed and wanted to re-jailbreak it, only to notice that this damn thing will delete the older firmware file... |

I just upgraded my Oasis from 5.7.4 to 5.8.7 ----- now the screensavers hack isn't functioning and KUAL says "Application Error" and won't open. I probably did something wrong...
What I did to upgrade: I dragged "update_kindle_oasis_5.8.7.bin" to the main folder, disconnected the kindle (ejecting device first), and then did Settings ---> Update. What should I do to get KUAL back up and running? |

Oooh yeah. The horizontal Oasis layout changed everything for me. It's very small and light weight, has even distribution of that weight (I prefer the symmetry), and it has wider margins while still maintaining those benefits.
After getting used to it I just had to take the final step and customize it with screensavers. I am not sure what else to do with the jailbreak but I do like the customized "my own" feeling that the screensavers give. I'm so glad there is an active mod community that loves experimenting and gives gifts like this! My Paperwhite is currently on a little stand on my desk as a classy adjustable photo frame thingy, and functions as backup. ![]() Last edited by lllusion; 04-11-2017 at 12:48 PM. |
