I wonder if anyone can answer a question for me about Windows 10?
My mum and dad are in their 80s, and do not have or want Internet access. My dad, though, has asked me for advice on buying a laptop computer because he wants to use it to write with. The hardware side of things isn't a problem, but does anyone know if Windows 10 can be used without an Internet connection? Both for initial registration and for ongoing use? Thanks, |

I think it can but it would not be able to update and of course it has to be 'registered' but if the machine is purchased with Win 10 on it you might be able to skip that....not certain though because every new machine I've purchased has 'required' me to register/activate it. Perhaps that could be done with a connection available and then nothing required beyond that. You'd probably want to have it set to 'Never check for updates' as well or errors might pop up. |

One option would, I suppose, be for me to register it and then take it to my Dad's house. Thanks for your reply. Appreciate it. |

You can also get the full control panel from the ribbon in any explorer window.
Click on System Priorities (far right) and then Control Panel home (far left). It is also a quick way to Device Manager and Remote Settings. It wouldn't be Windows if it didn't have at least three ways to do anything. ![]() |

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/950929 Relevant bit ---- Windows 10 To start Product Activation: Go to Start, then select Settings, choose Update & security, and then select Activation. If your device is not activated, the Activate by phone option will be available. ---- If they are never going online though, don't you have an old XP laptop you are not using? Remember to explain backups ![]() |

That what I was going to suggest, provide them with an old laptop of yours (if you have one spare), strip it down to just want they need then you won't need to worry about it other than backups.

And, well, current prices on low end Windows gear is really, really low. For example, the last few weeks have seen the HP Stream11 hit a low of $120 and the Stream 13 $179. There are $150 stick PCs that turn a Monitor or a TV into an All-in-one. Add a cheap wireless keyboard and mouse and you can have an "invisible" PC. There is a lot of action coming to low-end PCs these next few months and a lot of it is because of Win10's ability to run very well on Low End hardware. Like this stuff: https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=263643 For us, Win10 is about the upgrades and the cloud. But there's a whole other story behind Win10 beyond the upgrades.
