I wish all of you guys in the danger areas would come stay with me for a few months until it gets figured out. The ambiguity of the reports worries me most of all. Are people really safe, or are the authorities downplaying the danger?

It is time to take vacation time from work and get as far away as possible, if it were I.

well, if ever the radiation is swept our way by the wind, most probably we would hear from Taiwan first before it hits us

i certainly hope not. our country is poor enough already.

That's not good, but perhaps it's just as well that you can't get home right now. At least one of you is safe. I'm sure your sister would want that. What would be better is if she could come visit you until the danger is past.

I read that the radiation shouldn't reach as far as Korea, so I think anyone outside of the immediate area of Japan should be fine, for the time being.

Also, because of its short half life, and relatively long dispersal patterns, I 131 would be the least of one’s worries outside of a fairly short distance from the source of the radioactivity.

I can understand the stupidity of the general public, they have the excuse of not knowing or understanding, but the media has researchers that could find the same information you found, hell they should be better at it with their experience, no offense.

And when has the media ever been accused of knowing what they are talking about, there are numerous examples of the media making errors and later retracting the statements.

Uh... guys? When I suggested taking iodine, I was being facetious. If you are in an area where the radiation levels are so bad as to require increased iodine in your diet, you have far more serious radiation issues to deal with...

While the levels of radiation have increased since the explosions, the levels being found in downwind areas are still far from harmful. Radiation is measured in quantities for a year's exposure. If you are exposed to X level for one year the result is Y. The levels that are being seen haven't even approached the danger level for a year's exposure, much less from a passing wind.

As of 10am Japan time Wednesday, the radiation levels in near the reactor sites, although higher than normal, are not anywhere near a danger point, even for long term exposure. Tokyo, being much further south, is even safer.
