I looked at Bionic Reading when it was first mentioned on MobileRead. I tested it with 2 books and I found no gains for me in speed/comprehension. However, it was annoying as all get out. I tried one short ebook with a test group and the kindest opinion was that it sucked.

I rank it with quite a few other systems that were supposed to increase speed and/or comprehension that, IRL, were full of sound and fury signifying nothing. P. T. Barnum may not have said "there's a sucker born every minute" but his business model showed he believed it.

I can see how some reading difficulties might be helped by this.
But I suspect that even if it did work, long term, you'd find the benefits carried over into normal reading as well, or would fade over time.

Sometimes, changing *anything* will have a positive effect.

There is an API for this, so it should not be very hard to get this option working in Calibre.

I would pay money for this.

Once you've read a book using the BIONIC font on your Kindle, you won't want to ever go back, it is that good.
Then you would be cheated if you payed money for Bionic Reading.

I too found reading became worse with Bionic Reading. For a system that's supposed to be better, it's actually worse.

And when I looked up things like this online, it was found that in scientific tests that fonts such as Ariel or Helvetica work best.

Hello, I would like it if the goodreads_rating plugin could collect the ratings and reviews and have that data in custom columns.
I have read an article about it (https://usman.io/goodreads-decimal-ratings-in-calibre/ )
But it doesn't work with the updated plugins.

Extract epub revision plugin

Does anyone know if there is a way to get a review of an epub book that is written inside the book?
There is a plugin that extracts the ISBN, could there be one that extracts the revision from the epub"?

I am not sure if that is practical. The ISBN is a well defined format that can be searched for and extracted. I don't think the same can be said for the revision. I haven't seen it in that many books, but, I don't think it is there in a consistent way. If it is, then coding something similar to the ISBN extract plugin would be possible for someone who was interested.

Formatting PDFs for tts (e.g. Speechify)

Hiya,

I'm a heavy audiobook lover, primarily because it's the only way I get the time to absorb media anymore...

Anyway, I've been using Speechify to 'read' work documents and non-DRM texts. Unfortunately, Speechify reads EVERYTHING... all the page numbers, bullet points, comments, etc...

I've been trying to find a way to format/clean my pdfs to remove all the unnecessary bumph and leave the pristine text behind.

I'm not sure if this would require a plug-in, and I haven't found one, but I figured you'd be the people to ask...

Many thanks.

Dictionary conversion and management.
  • Convert existing dictionary to form expected by target device
  • know location for installation and inventory what is on device
  • maintain directory of GPL or equivalent dictionaries and their locations so they can be downloaded to calibre directly
This project could provide a good start on the conversion part: https://github.com/Markismus/PocketBookDic

Manage ePub/PDF content in iCloud
  • At least on Mac, there are command line tools to manage iCloud content
  • This could add/delete, download/remove downloads for Books and other (iOS mostly) apps that support iCloud
  • There should also be some things possible on Windows when iCloud client is installed

I don't know what you want. The book_id is a number created by calibre when you add a book to the library. It has no meaning outside of that library. So, I don't understand how you would use that id to get metadata from a website.

ok so it's the one that creates caliber. I was asking because I didn't know what the book ID was referring to in the plugin descriptions.
