I started with the Palm that I had always with me anyway, with low priority bureaucratic stuff to read while commuting. I found out that it was very practical. I learned the fine art of self producing stuff. Than why not real books. That summer I did not have to pack a large bag of books any more.

For vacations. I was taking 4-5 books to read on the beach. Thought it would conserve space.

This. It was becoming increasingly difficult for me to read the tiny print. I'd gotten a pair of reading glasses to wear with my contact lenses, but then the lighting had to be just right, too. The Kindle has changed my life. I've read more books since getting it a little over a year ago than I did in the previous 4-5 years combined.

With my Sony (and removable storage) I now can have all the books I want, without limit, and every one weighs less than 10 oz and comes in a leather cover. Plus I figure the number of free books (out of copyright) I read in the first month likely were worth at least as much as my reader, so that was a nice plus.
You made me curious about how heavy all my books would have been so weighed a few of the boxes I still have and multiplied it by the total number of boxes I had before I started scanning and came up with a little over 1/2 ton. This is roughly 1000-1200 books. Thank God most are not hardbacks or it would be closer to a ton!

I bought mine because I eventually want to stop having the problem of having physical books to get rid of. I don't want to keep more than about 10% of the books I read but it is quite difficult to get rid of books where I live (I have tried all the usual things like swap sites and donations and selling second hand and all of that but it is just a big hassle or ends up costing me a small fortune which I'd rather spend on new books).

Being that I live in Australia and there are not many of the ebooks that I want to read available yet I know it'll be a few years before I can go paper free but I felt I needed to help the process along in my little way buy buying a device here in Australia to help push up the numbers and make publishers realise there's a market here for ebooks.

Sell books on eBay in large lots - 20 - 30 books at a time. Some used bookstore will likely pick them up.

I agree that selling books individually is for the birds.

the e-ink technology (because if you want to read from computer-i read about 200 books-it can be so harmful for your eyes)
the big battery life (you can read book everywhere about weeks with one charge)
price (you can find a lot of free books to read)

I liked that I could store multiple books and not have to worry about the weight of it all. I also like being able to borrow books from the public library and not having to leave the comfort of my home to do so (although I do still visit the library sometimes).

So I could stop buying p-books, as I have eventually run out of space to store them, and also to get rid of all my ebooks off my PC.

And the fact that I was getting on the wife's nerves bugging her for one for a couple of years

I won one in a contest. I hadn't even really thought about getting one, but then I was only reading about a book a month prior to getting one. Since I got one, I'm reading about a book a week and it's just made the commute a joy. Of course the luster is wearing a bit one me. Not so much the experience, but just the cost of e-books. Now the e-reader is doing the public domain options while I'm using the library for physical books a lot more. That will change when I can borrow books from the library on a Kindle in Canada.

I re-sell about 90% of my pBooks. Even ones I like a lot. Moving just makes having shelves and shelves of books a difficult and costly habit.

I first got interested because I liked the thought of being able to enlarge the font for easier reading.
Once I realized I could borrow e-books, right after release, from the eLibrary There really wasn't much to think about any more!
(I don't keep large book collections on my reader, so even if I do appreciated the ability to do so it wasn't a decidning factor for me.)

Our branch library closed for renovations. And for anyone who heard me tell this story before, I have an update. The original reno period was supposed to be a year, and now the year is up and they added another year! In the meantime, I'm reading more library books than ever, thanks to their excellent ebook lending program.
