If your ePubs have Adobe DRM and you don't want to strip it then I'm not sure you can yet read them on an iPad without jailbreaking it (someone please correct me if things have moved on!)

If you are happy to strip DRM, or your books are free of DRM, then you can convert all your books in one batch quickly and easily to Mobi format for free using Calibre and use them on a Kindle.

So for the purpose of reading your current ePubs the Kindle is just as viable as the iPad.

Thank you Graham, I didn't know that. None of my epubs have any DRM, so will they go on a Kindle okay, via Calibre in the same way my books go on my Sony, via USB?

Yes, once you convert them to Mobi.

I read fanfiction, which is posted on blogs as free fiction, which is why my books are free, and I have 1000's of stories, most book length. I take the text from the blog, pop it on word, save as RTF, and then load on my Sony, or convert to epub and load on my iphone.

I think the only issue with using Mobi and Calibre with the Kindle will be that your books won't get automatically synchronised between devices over Whispernet, but that won't really be an issue if you're only reading on one device. It's a nice-to-have feature in any case, rather than anything critical.

A vendor which the vast majority of the public see as THE VENDOR for digital books. Listen, I'm not saying it's right, or it's fair even, but I know when I'm licked and Amazon have given ePub and the rest of the digital book market a damn good licking.

The problem is that people by the Kindle and then want to borrow library eBooks and can't. Can't even borrow PDF. I'm not talking people who know how to strip DRM and format convert, but the average person who has no idea about DRM stripping/converting. For the people who want to borrow library eBooks, the Kindle is the wrong choice of reader.

Amazon should do something about that. But they won't because Jeff would have to give up control of the format of eBooks and allow content (with DRM) to be able to be purchased away from Amazon and he won't do that. Jeff's saying that the technology is changing too much to have ePub is pure BS. All of the enhancements Amazon has made to Mobipocket (aka AZW) they can make to ePub.
You've identified a problem that can be solved, not a reason why ePub can survive the worldwide assault (and brand recognition) of Amazon. It's all about the path of least resistance when it comes to adoption. If you can sit on the beach and buy the latest best-seller on a whim, worldwide, then the average punter is going to jump at the chance. If you can get your newspaper delivered, then people are going to jump at the chance. The average punter probably has no clue about ePub vs .mobi (AZW) - most didn't have a clue about Betamax vs VHS either. What they do know is that Amazon sells books, they know that Amazon sells an ereader that can access those books, they do not care about DRM or formats or loaning out from a library (again, a problem that can be solved).

Another reason to just throw up our hands and say 'Okay, Amazon, you win', is the absolutely generous treatment that Amazon gives to independent commercial authors. Amazon is creating, little by little, a new mid list where these authors can survive, maybe even make a living with 70% royalties on their books. None of the other companies are doing this (B&N are making baby steps, but not much more).

For nearly two years I've backed ePub, but it and the companies that adopted it as a format have done nothing beyond a few meagre book stores, some limp hardware updates, and adding a few more types of DRM. We need to move forward, and to do that, some of us (the staunchest supporters of ePub even) have to admit that it failed to do what it promised and that the general public have, and are continuing to choose Amazon over everyone else.

Here's the Borders app info page:

http://www.borders.com/online/store/..._ebooksipadapp

It's not clear, but it looks as though you can only read books bought from Borders from the iPad. Just searching the forums here for more info...

The Borders/Kobo apps use their "Mobile" format, not ePub.

I'm still kind of holding onto hope that the Notion Ink Adam will show up before the end of the year, though.
Although your observation that dark absorbs heat can be important in Arizona. I left my dark blue Sony PRS-505 in direct 100 deg. F sun for about 10 minutes, and it got quite hot to the touch (135 deg. on the back and 130 deg. on the screen according to my infrared thermometer). This caused fading of letters, which I find understandable, because Sony says not to subject it to intense heat or light, and says the top operating temp is 95 F. I had been reading in the shade in that 100 deg weather for 2 hours beforehand with no problems.

Now, I don't know if a white casing would have made much difference, just wanted to let you know these results. I'm getting the graphite (I live in the northeast).

Seems to be the mantra of many of these companies.

Overdrive did say that they are working on apps for Android, iPad/iPhone, etc. that will allow Adobe DRM to be used on those products, but I haven't seen any news since they said it was coming months ago.

Moejoe, you're only speaking of that tying part of the world, called the united state of america.

Amazon is only beginning to move toward to UK..... They have a name, true, but if they keep on like that, they are kind of arriving after the battle. Even if amazon decided to open an amazon.fr store, with books in French. Well, too late amazon, I already have a collection in an other format, i'll keep it.
So their hope there would be to convince new e-books users...
