try this, and try not to think real hard. go get a canteloupe put it into your shirt. pull the seat belt across it. start backing up. if it is a well fitting caneloupe, you will notice as you tighten your left peck as you look over your left shoulder to clear your rear left that the seat belt rides up towards your neck, and the upper part that attaches to the frame of the car blocks your eyes. I've had these puppies for a long time. I'm a trained professional with them. don't try it without supervision ` |

Wow I wasn't expecting quite such a big response to my initial question!
I actually dug up this info document from CASA (Civil Aviation Safety Authority, for non-Aussies), a little out of date now but still quite interesting. http://www.casa.gov.au/newrules/part.../ac091-050.pdf Apparently the degree of interference also has a fair bit to do with the location of the device inside the plane, the variability of the signal and what the plane's electronic systems are doing at the time. Electronic watches have been tested and found to be safe, but others including electronic games have been shown to interfere with navigation. Methinks I'll be good and turn my ereader off, annoying as it is. |

And another link, from Flight Safety Magazine, with examples...

Well, my car doesn't, and somehow, I feel "naked" without my seatbelt on correctly (I'll even put it on when I back out of my driveway to park the car in front of the house...)

Some form of that announcement seems pretty standard on the flights I've been on. |

Yes, that's perfectly true. What I'm wondering is whether people will understand that it applies to their readers, or will think that it's only mobile (cell) phones that need to be turned off?

mmm
mobile (cell) phones 'should' be switched off in hospitals [so ours keep telling us] - that also apply, one wonders, to readers ? |

I would certainly have thought that one should turn off the radio of a reader (for those which have them) in a hospital.
