As tompe says, that's criminal activity, not civil. And whatever you may feel about it, your personal safety is not directly impacted by purely civil infringements in the world of IP.

And yes, the crime rates continue to fall year on year.

I'm curious to know your source for the figures. In the UK, we have the British Crime Survey - is it their figures you're referring to?

Actually in Sweden it is both civil and criminal.

I have no data references, but I believe I've heard that the VIOLENT crime rate (however that is defined) had declined in the USA.

Update: Just saw this locally:

In all seriousness, I come from a working community whereby people of all nationalities, religions, personal beliefs, have been encouraged to mix and trade for centuries.

This has not been successful for this long due to strict guidelines and codes of behaviour, but rather respect for other peoples opinion. Our success has been down to toleration and I am yet to come across any group of people in the world that I have ever had a large problem communicating with.

Even this is now being eroded under ever more draconian policies, which is creating an air of suspicion before anyone has actually met. Our security and safety always relied upon each and everyone of us looking out for each other and I have yet to see anything that contradicts that ethos.

My working community...............the Merchant Marine, we have worked alongside each other, eaten together, partied together, lived together and generally trusted each other, since ships first sailed the oceans. I feel priviliged to still be a part of a community that most governments take great lengths to tell us doesn't work.

I think it's more likely the fact that you have a ray gun attached to your front.

All this talk about loss of civil liberties in regards to the airlines' restrictions is really missing the point. The restrictions are less about limiting our freedoms and more about protecting their financial interests. I will grant that our personal safety (and that of the crew) is of some concern, but the loss of a very expensive aircraft and the resulting negative publicity which could ultimately reduce flight bookings is the main reason we have as many travel regulations as we do. If people feel every safety precaution has been taken, they are more likely to travel by air. It may sound cynical, but air travel is a business and a business exists to make a profit. If I were running a business, I would take whatever measures necessary to ensure my business is secure and successful. I still loathe taking my shoes off for screening, but I do understand the motivation behind it.

They do have sudden checks. For drugs mostly (and the end of the year, between the German and Dutch borders for fireworks as well). They are not announced, and about every car will be pulled over and checked.

It was very weird this year when we went to Hungary. The last time we went there was in August/September 2008 (they are part of the Shengen Treaty since december 2007) and while you didn't have to stop anymore, the border was still "working". When we were there two weeks ago, everything was closed up (booths and such) and people had no idea how the road went (so it was mayham! luckily, it was also very quiet...).

The border we always cross to get into Germany, you can't even see there was a border except for the traffic sign with a country name on it...

I think people that fly a lot know that the security precaution mostly are just for show. The airline companies loose customers because of them. And it is not the airline companies that decide what security things to implement.

I know it will be a long time before I fly to the US again. Not because I'm afraid of flying (due to terrorism), but because I'm automatically a suspect because I want to fly...

I thank all who have participated in this thread. I learned the name to put to the impression I have always had -- Security Theatre. And I was reminded of the word that describes what it is based upon -- hyperbole.

I have also concluded long ago that TSA employment interviews consist of only one thing -- if you are courteous and polite during the interview, you won't be hired.
