I read pretty much the same stuff at all times, general science, history (especially of science and technology), fiction and SF... no matter what's going on in my life, I still want the same information coming in. (I also use a lot of it to develop my novels.)

/personal opinion ON
With a few exceptions of blindingly obviously dangerous information ("Make Your Own Sarin in 5 Easy Steps"), reading of any and all kinds is a good thing. Even reading the dangerous info can be a good thing, it's just not ALWAYS good.

Hey rebellious kid, want to read an outlaw comic with drawings of nekkid people doing outrageous things? Here you go.

You there, the tweedy guy, how about a copy of Moby Dick? Go fantasize.

Yo, nerd! Here have a copy of 'Neuromancer'. It'll turn your brain the color of a mistuned TV picture.
/personal opinion OFF

YMMV

Regards,

It's great when great books get people to read. But it's really just as good when popular books get people to read... at the very least, it keeps their literacy active, and they can always move on to read something else.

Well, there's definitely a subtext in "movements" like this. I don't really know if that is good or bad. The thing is it may encourage people to read, but they may only be interested in reading a certain type of book or author rather than reading in general.

That's a risk... but it's a risk with most book genres and types, too. Not everybody succumbs to it, fortunately, and for the rest... well, they have to hope that their genre of choice doesn't die off and leave them nothing to read.

Usually, though, the subtext of one genre can be found, to some extent or another, in other genres... for instance, if "vampire romance" went away tomorrow, the "dangerous man" romances and traditional horror genres could fill that void for most, I think. And as people jump genres, they expand their range even further.

True, the bottom line is often about the human condition, eh?

Okay, okay, I'm officially retracting my remark! It wasn't that funny anyway.

All right, move along, folks! Nothing to see here! Move along!

Actually, a few people have been after me to write my biography.

I'm really quite jealous of the life I'm supposed to be living!

Huh. Impressive. See, my brain actually gives up. There's something about running left and right in harness for 8 hours that turns the whole thing kinda squidgy. Then I watch something like Wayne's World and laugh my head off. Sad, I know
