I'm thinkin
Will Sony get out of the e-book business, no. I think we are going to witness a battle for dominance in the digital media market with e-books just being a small part of the overall battle. Players will be Apple, Amazon, Barnes and Noble, Goggle and Sony. Sony, Apple and Amazon playing to win the hardware battle for now. Goggle, B&N and Amazon fighting for content. PlasticLogic may hit one out of the park but long term they will fall or be gobbled up by one of the big boys. Right now it takes a good reader and a lot of content to be a player. It wouldn't surprise me to see the pairing for the next round Sony & Goggle, Amazon & Amazon, B&N and PlasticLogic, Apple and Apple or Apple and Amazon. Eventually I think Sony loses because they see themselves as a hardware company and not a content company and while they often make superior products they almost always lose the media battles. B&N and PlasticLogic will also lose cause they can't compete in the same arena as the big boys but maybe make a mint in a merger situation. Apple eventually wins the electronic media gadget by offering a high-end, can't be seen without it whatever and pair themselves with somebody, not named Goggle, for publishing content and Amazon becomes the only other Gorilla in the room. But back to the immediate question - what is Sony going to do? My guess create some more good products and maybe try to solve their content problem by pairing up with Goggles new book store in a marriage of convenience for both partners. just sayin Last edited by fbrII; 07-28-2009 at 06:43 PM. |

I don't know if Sony will win, but either way I hope they stay in the business of selling ebook devices. They are the only one on your list fbrII, that appears to let you store your library locally and not lock the consumer into one format.
Even though Sony lacks content like the big name stores, in my opinion, they've been doing a good job in letting the buyer obtain content from other avenues. As a consumer, that's what I'm looking for in an ebook device. If only more businesses opened up their format for Sony. It would've been nice if the big book stores like Amazon and B&N stayed in the business of selling books and not hardware. Let Sony and other hardware companies duel it out and Amazon and B&N could just sell ebooks that support the devices. In my opinion that would've been nice. A vast library of ebooks that isn't locked to any particular device. Last edited by MerLock; 07-28-2009 at 09:02 PM. |

Merlock,
I think your day will arrive soon. I see it like this, Goggle announced public domain content through the Sony book store in order to slow down the Kindle/Amazon momentum. Goggle then announced their intent to open a new book store. The book store will support Sony devices and will also make their content available to other device makers as well (I'm speculating now), again to stop the Amazon/Kindle train. Sony closes their bookstore (more speculation) and goes into partnership with Goggle on content. While Goggle chooses an open architecture but uses their marketing clout to push Sony readers or creates advantages/benefits that only Sony can initially take advantage of (still speculating). Amazon either capitulates and opens their content or knowing the competition's game plan they strike preemptively by announcing their own plan to sell content in multiple formats or make AZW/Mobi available to all device makers (more speculation). Hope I'm not dreaming but I think it's going to happen, my scenario may be off base, but I think the real battle is about selling content, the secondary battle is about selling devices. I think Sony is trying to position themselves to be one of the few standing high quality digital device sellers when all the smoke clears - while Amazon, Goggle and probably Apple fight the real war to dominate the content market, which means making your content accessible to as many buyers as possible. Anyway that's my theory/speculations and I'm stickin to them - at least until I hear the next "major" announcement. Last edited by fbrII; 07-28-2009 at 11:14 PM. |

I guess the one good thing about Amazon launching the Kindle was that it brought more light into the subject of ebooks. Sony launched the 500 a year before the Kindle I believe and I don't think publishers were sold on the idea of ebooks nor were consumers.
But when Kindle was launched, other companies seemed to take a serious look at the ebook business and a lot of other companies joined the rank in making the readers. I'm guessing when the publishers saw that people were buying these devices they knew they had to jump on board and provide content or else loose out to other publishers. But it would've been nice if Amazon and B&N stuck to selling books and companies like Apple and Sony competed against one another on the hardware side. |

I am just glad to see Sony and Apple playing nice with the software announcement. I would really be shocked if Sony totally left the market, However it would not surprise me to see Sony focus on the hardware and allow someone else to handle the content portion. That has been my frustration over the last year with my 505's is I am a Mac guy and I really wanted either an interface on available on my computer or a web based store either would have worked for me. Also I am finally seeing the content I was wanting from the beginning showing up at the Store. So my bet is on a new device and the possibility of A new Store.

The new head of Wal-Mart used to be the head of Target, thus the similarities.

Thank you!
I sent an email to Sony. As expected, nothing they can tell me about new products or if they will exit this market or not... The 505 sounds like the way to go. Just wondering if I should wait a few months... just in case. Quote:

I heard that Sony will bring out 2 new readers: a 300 and 600. They will not support wireless lan, whispernet or similar technologies. The 600 supposedly has a touch screen.
