Sorry, not seeing on my Touch. I dumped some thoughts/questions in the thread. And I see that Witty Username's post answers some of them.

I already mentioned I see this issue on my son's original touch. However I haven't taken the time to answer davidfor's questions (likely because it's not on my own reader it would bug me more if that were the case)

Only question I can answer straight away is that he only reads sideloaded epubs. So no kepub.

These reminder pop-ups are not an issue. In fact, I think they do good. They let me know of books I opened but did not read. Some may have been opened by accident. I was easily able to mark them as unread.

I have finally had a response from Kobo - week after first contacting customer 'care'.

Less than helpful:

Quote:
At this time, we recommend that you perform a forced reset on your eReader.
Not willing to do this as it means a lot of time wasted* re-loading books, sorting shelves etc.
And lohtse said here that the problem persisted even after a factory reset.

I am currently using version 4.5.9587 with no problems so I will stay with that until I see any info about the next upgrade. Or if someone here finds a solution.

* Yes, I know that is supposed to be easy if I have all my books on Calibre but I don't actually find Calibre very easy to use. There, I said it! It seems to be good for those with programming knowledge but not for people who just want to read their ebooks.

I thought Peter T said this version was no longer being offered, but looking back, he was talking about 9960.

Calibre can be very easy to use. The more you use Calibre, the more you'll learn. I learned how to use Calibre from playing with it, Google, the online manual, and Mobileread.

Less than helpful indeed. In fact, I installed the previous version (4.6.9960) after a factory reset, and that's when the problem first surfaced. (I did the factory reset because of what probably was a messed up database)

I had the issue with the black margins on 4.6.9960 as well, though after restarting my touch the problem went away. I have since installed 4.6.9995 and haven't yet seen the issue come back with kepub or sideloaded epubs. I do however have a tiny black square showing up in the top left corner on about 90+% of pages when reading a book (epub and kepub both).
I do still get the strange screen corruption across the bottom of the home screen page on this device, but that has been going on for a very long time with the touch and doesn't happen when reading a book.
I very seldom use this old device anymore but if I do start using it again regularly I think I will go back to a much older Firmware and just leave it there.

Edit: Just after posting this I had the black margins show up on an epub book on the touch. Got out of the book and went back in and the black margins are gone again for a minute or so and then the black margins appeared again, I think this device is going back to an older Firmware and will be staying there. Now I just need to decide how far back to go for Firmware.

Did some more testing and have the issue showing up with kepubs as well now, very odd how this only impacts the touch. (by the way I have the N905, no A, B or C).

I agree with JSWolf. Calibre is really easy to use and we'll designed. All you need to do is ignore the features which you don't use or understand, because the defaults are quite good.

I don't use it much myself though because I prefer to edit metadata by hand and process my books with bash scripts. I also do not do much conversion except epub => kepub and mobi => epub. I use calibre for mobi to epub, and my own tool for epub => kepub. I currently use calibre to update series metadata on the Kobo, but I just finished a command line tool for doing that.

That's been appearing on my N905 Touch for a while. I'm now wondering if it is related to the black margins that others are seeing.

Same here. I know Kobo had problems reproducing it as it doesn't affect all the Touches. I'm not sure if it just the N905 version, or some of them.

That's interesting. I wonder what changed between one test and the other.

I've never 'programmed' Calibre other than adding DRM removal tools. As an ebook manager, it's very easy. Very easy to add tags (which show as Collections) on the Kobo reader, easy to change metadata, covers, etc. Easy to reformat.

I'm not a programmer, wouldn't know how to program the thing if forced to, but I've been using Calibre for years and wouldn't want to manage my books or readers without it.

I just realized that I've seen no discussion of the new "Manage books" function of the new firmware.

In "My Books" | Books view, tap the ... on the top line. Select the "Manage books" option. The screen will show a list of books on the device with a clickable box before each title. Mark the books you want to manage, and then at the bottom of the screen buttons exist to "Mark as" (read or unread), "Add to" (New collection or existing collection), and "Remove" (from device or My Books on website).
