Agreed entirely. I'm very surprised that there are still some people arguing that lyrics aren't poetry. Heck, I went to a very conservative school, and even way back in the 1980s we were studying song lyrics in senior English Literature classes.

As for the rather tangential question of whether they've been published in paper book form:

I have always thought some songs are nothing more than poetry set to music. Try reading the lyrics of some songs without the music.

Are you seriously suggesting that lack of access to communication devices is the reason that Mr Dylan hasn't been in touch with the Academy?

If he's working on a new creative project, he just might not want to be disturbed.

I can understand that. If I'm doing the yearly calendars for the family and working in Photoshop with my pics, I don't want to be bothered. Period.

Dylan has always been difficult. This not responding is entirely in character. Fortunately being polite and socially adept is not a criterion for winning a Nobel prize in any catagory. If it was a whole lot of physicists would have missed out on a bonus.

I am pleased he won the award but then I'm not educated and modern poetry is generally incomprehensible to me. Finally a winner where I don't have to trust the opinions of experts as to the validity of the recipient. I. Sorry the committee are hurt regarding his response. Frankly I'm surprised that they didn't anticipate it. Be like expecting Einstein to show up with a nice haircut.

I suppose they can at least be grateful that he hasn't (yet) turned it down, as Jean-Paul Sartre did.

Love the Einstein comment! So true.

If the prize is to honor Dylan, they have no right to be upset at his lack of "expected" response. They sound like they wanted HIM to fawn over THEM for picking him.

I think I'd be quite grateful if someone were to award me a Nobel Prize . It's just common courtesy, surely, to say "thank you"?

If he picks his prize up at the ceremony, I’m sure he’s going to say thank you. No need to do it before, though.

Yep, Dylan has long been notorious for being oblivious to the social graces and focused on music. If you think Mozart as portrayed in Amadeus, then you wouldn't be far off the mark.

This was Doris Lessing's reaction to the news:

Well, in recent years, when October came round and Dylan once again didn't win the Nobel, some of the real hardcore Dylan nutcases aficionados on their fan forums would go on about how Dylan didn't need the Nobel, but the Nobel needed Dylan in order to regain relevance. So perhaps the Swedish Academy should thank him once he has found the time to acknowledge the prize.

No, but it seems to be customary for the recipient to tell the Academy in a few words that they are grateful, and whether they intend to accept the award and to attend the ceremony. And I really don't think that's asking too much. But it's Bob, so there...
