Where are you getting the percent sign from? I've never seen it used that way.

8+1
9

The "/" means division in a math problem. So...when I did the problem using order of operations, I did the first division problem (3/1), then the second division problem (3/3), then the subtraction, then the addition.

The correct way to write the problem would be:
9-3%(1/3)+1

In that case, the 1/3 would have been the first calculation, so that it would be:
9-3%(1/3)+1
9-3%.33+1
9-9+1
0+1
1

Two completely different math problems.

Shari
Thanks, Shari. I considered that the use of the "÷" sign was an indication that the "1/3" was to be interpreted as a fraction, although your interpretation is certainly a valid, albeit (to my mind) a less likely one.

I hadn't either, but since I don't know how to make a "traditional" division symbol (although I'm sure that there is a way to do it) I used the percent to make a close approximation. (Harry figured it out, so I guess it worked )

...and, I just realized that I could have just copied and pasted the ÷ from the original problem. I guess I hadn't had enough coffee yet when I posted the first time, sorry.

The second group of books, I personally mostly liked. The language looks a lot more like modern Dutch, a lot of travel stories in the bunch, which I always liked and still do. And prose, instead of verse.

The third group of books, I hated. All dramas, all heavy, all about some mental problems people had to go through. I hate drama. Clear and simple. I don't watch drama on TV, I don't read dram. But they were "literature"!
Ever since I wrote this, I've been thinking about that one book I liked in the post-war set... And today, I was looking on the Kobo store and saw the book "The Hyperion Cantos" and it suddenly triggered...

De Verwoesting van Hyperion (1978) by Hugo Raes (probably never translated into English, but the English translation would be The Destruction of Hyperion). It's one of the few (if not the only) Dutch (language) SF book that is considered literature...
