You should really be better informed before you start typing. You can read ebooks from Amazon on Windows PCs, Mac OSX, Android phones, iOS devices, Blackberry phones, Windows Phone. It is not limited to Kindles.

...but none of those are my dedicated e-reading device, which is a Kobo.

The problem is that when you release a book on Kindle ONLY, folks like me who don't convert between formats can't read the books on our e-readers, which is why we HAVE our e-readers: to read on them.

True, but carpetmojo was stating that you can only read Amazon ebooks on a Kindle which is not true. Yes, you can't read them on other ereaders but you can read them on a number of other devices.

So if I can follow your logic, authors have an obligation to have their works published in every language, and in every format including audio so that everyone, everywhere can read/hear them in the way they wish?

You chose a kobo as your e-reader. The author chose to publish at Amazon. Move on.

All I'm saying is that by choosing ONLY to publish on Amazon rather than take an extra step to publish through Smashwords or PubIt!, an author's missing out, and I think it's silly to miss out that way.

I demand an audiobook version of "The Chaos Chronicles" in that language that's made up of clicks and whistles. That I can't find it is an OUTRAGE!

Your justification is just silly. This is not about "oh I have reader xyz and I demand that we get pdq for it". What this is about is fair play. You know, being able to purchase an eBook in the format needed. It isn't fair play when Amazon gets some author to sign up for exclusivity. It isn't fair play when an author forgets there are people who do not buy eBooks from Amazon. It isn't fair play when people with a Kindle think it's OK for Amazon to try to take over the world. It isn't fair play to their customers when Amazon shoves an obsolete format at them. And it isn't fair play when Amazon stifles creativity.

Why does anyone bother dealing with Jon when he is talking about anything related to a Kindle?

When Sony, BN, and Kobo start selling books in Mobi I will worry that Amazon does not sell EPub.

If any author chooses to sell books only through Amazon that is their choice. It is going to cost them some business but that is something that the author has to decide.

Fair? You were fine and happy when Overdrive was only providing books to libraries in ePub or pdf....now you're unhappy when you're excluded and call it "unfair"?
And about Amazon taking over the world, just wear your aluminum foil hat and I'm sure you'll be okay. I can't decide if your rant is more sad or laughable.... but it is definitely hypocritical.
