I meant competition from the Kindle, which is arguably the brand name generally associated with e-readers in Australia, particularly if the queries we got at work a year or more before we started carrying the Kindle are any indication.

Thanks @Bookpossum & @IxiaAurea.

@Bookpossum, not long winded at all. Nice to get some insight from real people rather than gadget review sites etc. I personally use the one hand tap a lot, so the swipe would bug me, and I'm guessing the button at the bottom would be a little tricky one handed? I do like the collection and better sorting options, though to be frank I tend to read a book and then never touch it again on my device, but I can see the value for non-fiction, and those with large collections etc. I'd also love the multiple bookmark feature, or at the least a more robust note system for non-kobo epubs. The accessing TOC without leaving the page would also be nice.

Interesting about the flashes. You seem to be implying it is doing a full page refresh every page turn, verse the every 1-6pages of the KT, Nook ST and latest Kindles.

Anyway my father has been keen on an eReader, and with the Kobo Touch taking so long to be sold here I've been keen to track the other options. This seems like a nice one, though to be honest the new Kindles (2011/Touch) are also looking like a pretty good option also.

I still don't know if I like the glossy-ness (and glare you'd get). I think I'll have to get to a SONY store and have a look at one. Sure is a nice time to buy an eReader, lots of reasonable options at ok prices in AU for once.

My sis allowed me to read on her Red sony for a longer time today. It's not really glarey (my other past said it was but it doesn't get in the way of a good book!) What's actually bad is the matte back where oily fingerprints can be seen (eek) and hard to remove.
It's quite easy to hold the reader in one hand and press the buttons at the bottom because it's so light and I like how the buttons are like a raised and pointed shape.

Thanks for clarifying. I'd still imagine that you are doing some hand shuffling to reach down to the buttons no? The way I hold my Kobo is with my thumb just wrapped around such that I can just shift it over to touch the screen for a page turn. Work surprisingly well.

I saw the new Sony one in Target yesterday, it was too glossy for my liking, so I'll definitely be waiting for the Kobo Touch.

I emailed both Borders and Collins a few days ago, and was told that Borders 'are testing the KT to ensure integration with their systems, and they hope to release it in the next few weeks', and Collins said 'they will be stocking the touch ereader both online and instore and are hoping to get it all up by early November'...

Woo, hope it's true

I don't know why, but I always get a little suspicious of the various low post count people who pop in on certain topics. I think I'm just a little cynical as to the way certain marketing groups attempt to game comments and forums around the internet.

Actually, I'm just someone who just really wants a Kobo Touch, so I got in touch with some local stockists, and shared their replies here. I have been watching this thread for a while, as, like I said, I am after a KT.

And yeah, Collins were saying that they would have it in stock by early October about a month ago... so I'm not really going to put much faith into what they said this time around. But ya know...

I received my Kobo Touch yesterday that I ordered through Price USA during the Borders sale in September. All up cost $130.00. So far it's a fantastic little gadget. Have loaded up some books using calibre with no probs and it's light and comfortable to hold. The touch screen works well and I'm thrilled with it.

I just read a review of the 5 ereaders in the Courier Mail the Kobo (5 stars), the Kindle (non Touch models 4 stars), Sony PRS-T1 (4 stars), Laser EB 700 (4 stars) and Bebook Club S (31/2 stars).
I was surprised but pleased that the Kobo was "the best of the bunch" but the best part was where they said that Officeworks will carry the Touch at $179 within the month!

It finally looks like Australians might be able to buy one!!

That's great news. The deal with Collins was obviously going nowhere, and Officeworks has a much greater presence than Collins does, so that's really good for Kobo.

Is this the same article ? http://www.perthnow.com.au/e-readers...-1226169655579 its very brief I'm curious about why they marked one above the other. The news about officeworks is very interesting and is going to give the Kobo a big presence in our aussie market

In my latest JB HI FI catalogue, the Touch is advertised for $168, alongside the Wifi and the Sony T1.

Edit: it's listed on their site now too. http://www.jbhifi.com.au/portable/mp3-players/ebook-reader/

Very pleased with this news. JB HI FI has a big presence in Sydney. I might go tomorrow to play with any demo units.

Yes that's pretty much the same article.
I also wondered why the different stars were awarded. The Kindle models were non Touch so I thought that was the reason there. But the Sony seems to have all the same features plus audio? The only drawback is that the Sony store isn't available in Australia but the review even states you can buy books from other sources?

The main bit for me was the availability at Officeworks within the month!

Oh viviena I was just at JB an hour ago - I can't believe I didn't see them or at least a sign! I have one of those "No Junk Mail" stickers (which they usually ignore!!) so I don't have a catalogue.
This is exciting - I hope they have the desktop app worked out. I would hate to see a repeat of the NZ experience!
