Personally, no. The display technology is still too pricey. The 'smaller' 500 and 505 units are still quite expensive for the mass market. So I can't imagine a larger screen would be feasible any time soon from a marketing standpoint. And for the average consumer (and based on my experience!), the current models make a familiar substitute for paperback books. So a larger display isn't necessary for pure reading. (Yes, having a bigger display for pdfs and manuals, etc., would be great though!)

I mentioned to the Sony guys last year and again on Monday that I want something for my wife to grade papers on.

Nothing so far.

Just download the software and start it up with PRS connected. Works in a jiffy.
It even shows a little PRS picture!!

I had DE 1.0.467 already installed. I plugged my reader in, waited a little, then started DE. Where is the PRS icon supposed to be? I have no reference to it anywhere in DE.

Did you have DE installed before installing Connect?

I'm trying that and I got nothin' here.

Can you elaborate? What version of DE are you running, and are you talking about a 500 or a 505 Reader?

Can we maybe get a screen cap?

@ westsan

Do you realize how big this news is? Personally I would love to use DE instead of Connect...

What I've done is uninstalled Digital Editions and reinstalled just to make sure I have the latest version and no PRS icon with the 500. Must be a 505 thing.

Maybe it has to do with InDesign being installed too? Do you happen to also have InDesign on your system, westsan?

You've got us all in a tizzy -- you gotta explain!

Holy moly, I'm away from the forum for a couple months and come back to find I (with my 500) am obsolete! I was still kinda basking in that "early adopter" cachet.

So I fire up the ole 500 and it acts like it's forgotten what to do, hanging up on the startup screen. Eventually it moved on and let me charge it. So what's "bricking"? Is that what almost happened to it?

I haven't used it about 6-8 weeks, because my current biblio-obsession is with two authors who are unlikely to show up on the Connect site: one is an English writer, and the other is mainly published in small-press. Has anyone heard of either type of work getting onto the Connect site?

What's happened is that the battery died. Charging it fixes that problem. There is a hack you can get that will let you turn off your 500 so it doesn't use up the battery. It does require a reboot when you turn it back on. But that's not all that slow. But it means you'll have battery left when you go to use it.

Hey, Michele, welcome back!

Being English shouldn't be an issue, and I'd say the small press author would be a better candidate for self-selling their e-books like Steve Jordan does. If they're approachable (i.e. you can track down an e-mail address) you might try asking if e-books are something they've considered. That tactic has pulled in a few authors that we've heard of around here.

What I meant to say was that his books are published in the UK, not by a US publisher. I wonder if Connect would take on a UK publisher since the Reader isn't supported outside the US.

Hmmm. That is rather a different situation. I'd guess that the author and or publisher could negotiate the rights with Connect unless they were already bound from doing something like that, but they'd probably have to want to do so.

Your battery was flat. Hardly a surprise if you hadn't used your Reader for 6 weeks; it'll run for about 3 weeks on a charge, regardless of whether or not you use your Reader.

I can't comment on the small-press one, but I don't believe that "Connect" has a prohibition against English authors.
