It doesn't require knowing torrents exist.

I googled for "twilight ebook," and within the top ten entries was a torrent site that said,
"Come and download twilight ebook absolutely for free. Fast downloads. Direct download via HTTP available."

Following the link gets a list of torrents; picking one of them opens a page with more details, including "To use this torrent you need a client like [software with link] or [other software]." From that point, it's click-here-to-install, and it takes no technical awareness to make that work. It does take bypassing one's techie friends' advice about not downloading unknown software... but people who pay that much attention to their techie friends have a good chance of hearing about torrents & fileshare sites from casual conversation.

For Twilight, only Diesel and ebooks.com are stores ahead of the torrent roundup; the other links are blog sites mentioning free downloads. The torrent roundup is the third link for "harry potter ebook", because there are no legit, buyable versions to get in the way of the torrent listings.
