So you did try the carbon fiber violin! What is your opinion of it?

The CF violin sounded like a cheap wooden violin. For 5000$ you can get a lot more from a chinese-made wooden violin...you can probably get at least five of those that would give you more pleasure than the L&C Carbon violin.
Maybe you could have got some more and better sound out of the instrument with a different bridge, soundpost and other strings, but it really is not worth the effort.
If you really need an indestructable violin then it's the right choice, but apart from that I would never recommend it.

The very "different" shape and color are also a bit of a problem...for a "fiddler" it's OK, but for a serious musician it could mean trouble because classical musicians are traditionalists.

There have been more and more attempts at carbon fibre violins in the recent past, but so far the breakthrough has not been made yet.

Well, good news came in today...

Remember the time-contract that Gewandhausorchester Leipzig offered me?
It was a 50% position in the second violins.
Today I got a call from somebody in the orchestra asking whether I would consider changing that 50% second violin thing to a 100% first violin job. Of course it's still a time-contract, but it's a lot more attractive anyway...

I must have left a good impression...^^

I also am very happy with the violin I "discovered" while evaluating the expensive one. It's been a pretty unanimous decision for that violin from anybody who heard it so far. It easily kicked every other violin (including my teachers incredibly expensive Lupot) around in both volum and beauty of sound...and it's nice to play as well, so I guess I'll buy it.

Now all it takes to make me content is a victory at the audition next Tuesday...don't forget...

9:30 AM on Tuesday the 29th of May is the big day, German Summer Time as usual...

Best thing would of course be if I would get that job, then ask them to start the contract a bit later and do a couple of months in Leipzig for "Prestige" reasons and then go to the "unlimited" contract with the "insurance" that if they kick me out or I want to go somewhere else I have the "Big Player" in my curriculum vitae and don't have to worry about invitations...but maybe that's asking a bit much...

I have to get used to the new violin now and my energy-levels are also pretty low after all the strain of the past weeks/months so it could be that I don't perform as well as I could/should at that next (and for now last) audition, but I'll just go for it and try my best...

Whatever happens, I have achieved more than I would have expected and that's cool. Just one more for now and I'll have a bit (although not much because there is still that exam and concerts and stuff...^^) of peace and quiet

I'll try to make some recordings of the new violin after the audition so you can hear it as well but I doubt that the quality of recordings that I can make here will really be enough to show the qualities of the instrument...

A friend of mine says that he always plays with a better mental state after he gets a new "toy." For him its guitars and sports cars. May the positive mental energy of the new violin carry you through next Tuesday. We all want to say that we knew him when ....

Keep a positive attitude, and I believe this will all work out very well for you. You have some very attractive options already.

Well, that's it guys.

the story is over, I got the job today. Unfortunately I can't do the "Prestige Job" now, but I've got a "permanent" position now!!!
I think I'll try to get a job in a bigger house in the future, but for now I'll go to Erfurt (www.erfurt.de) and the Opera House there (www.theater-erfurt.de) and can now relax at least a bit (I've still got that exam coming, and have to move to erfurt in July and so on...) until I have to start work on July 30.

I'll also buy the violin that I now used for this audition. It has passed all tests now...

More details will follow...but for now...thanks for all your support. It's over, and I've glad. We'll see how/when/if this saga continues.

Way to go! Everything turned out right, you have an agreeable position and a darn good tool to perform it. Everything is not perfect but so it is being human!

I went to the links you set up. Funny how my brain took up on the German words. I used to speak it 40 years ago. Now I can't but seeing the words it slowly comes back.

Now since we can't all attend, could we ask for a scanned copy of the program from your opening night. Perhaps a photograph of the orchestra?
