Hey there. On KT3, firmware 5.8.0, SO version, the universal jailbreak doesn't work.
When I type the command in the search bar the screen flashes and it goes immediately back to the home. The device is not jailbroken. |

Please tell us what was the first point you had a problem with, by step number. Hint: I have a KT3, and it jail broke by following these directions exactly. Translation: Your doing something wrong, you have to give us enough of a hint for us to tell you what and where. |

I don't know why, my mind farted, I thought I'd read somewhere that Branch Delay's jailbreak was called "the universal jailbreak". I checked my firmware in device info and I had 5.8.0. That is already the same version as the factory firmware, but nonetheless I reset it and followed step 3 and 4. I put the archive named "main-htmlviewer.tar.gz" at the top of the tree ( at least of what can be accessed from usb ), went to home, typed ";installHtml" in the search bar and hit return. The screen flashed, went back to home, I didn't get the "You are jailbroken" document. EDIT: I'd be glad to give more info, but atm I don't know how to be more detailed than this |

This is a naive question but
Users who update to 5.8.8. under some conditions or after some mistakes may lose their jailbreak. We just suppose such a thing happened. My question: If previously they had made an image copy of their Kindle (using software like Clonezilla, or rsync with the "best" options); would it be possible for them to restore their Kindle to the previous jailbroken state? Obviously I do not wish to do it because I am very satisfied with my current jailbroken 5.7.4. and see no point in taking such a risk so please consider this to be an academic question. |

Without a jailbreak and add-in software, it is not possible to access anything other than visible USB storage. What is visible over USB storage is a tiny part of the system file tree. Install the "Rescue Pack" add-in now, before you make your mistakes (afterwards will be too late). Don't worry about how to use it, we can give instructions after you break your kindle. It is harmless until needed. |

The significance of the firmware image that you install is the fact that it is for in-factory, on production line, testing. Any difference or similarity in version number is non-significant. One of the differences between consumer and factory firmware images is that consumer firmware build does not include the ";installHtml" feature. Which you have just confirmed for yourself. The only reason we install the factory initial firmware build is because it contains that command. NOW: Start at top of post, with "Step 0", then follow each of the instructions, exactly, in-order, no shortcuts allowed. Just "do it" - even if you think you don't have to, just do it. I didn't write all of those directions because I like to hear my keyboard click. Last edited by knc1; 04-01-2017 at 08:24 PM. |

I did not find the "rescue pack" here or in the first post of this thread. Could you please give me a link? |

You started your description with Step #3 so what else was I suppose to think? Let me guess, you are using a Mac. If so . . . . Did you download the Step #5 archive with your Mac? If so, you probably have its download options set to the: "Safe download(ing)" or whatever Apple calls their maximum user protection settings. I.E: The Mac's downloader destroyed the required structure of the archive. It is detected as a tar bomb but it is suppose to be a tar bomb, that is a requirement. The "maximum safety" settings of a Mac will open the archive, strip the leading directory separator from all of the contents, save the contents to the file system (with the archive name as the top most directory rather than root), and then re-create a "safe" version of the archive, destroying the functionality required in this case. Open a terminal session and download it with wget or curl rather than let the Mac automation get hold of it. I am sure one or the other or both is pre-installed on your Mac. (or run Linux or even Windows in a virtual machine to download it or change your overly protective downloader settings) #12 900 Mac Attack Last edited by knc1; 04-02-2017 at 08:14 AM. |

Stuck in 5.4.3.2
Help guys,
I did the downgrade and the jailbreak, all fine, but at itens 7 and 8 I'm a little confused. I turned on wi-fi but to upgrade OTA, do I have to register, or not? When I tried to, every time I got the same error. Ok, then I did the install of MrPI and Kual Packages and after this I put the file update_kindle_paperwhite_v2_5.8.7.bin in /mrpackages dir, then I ran the Kual at my Kindle Paperwhite 2 and I clicked in Install MR Packages. It shows like it had installed, and reboots, but it hadn't. After all when I check the usb folder, the update_kindle_paperwhite_v2_5.8.7.bin is gone, and nothing happend. I still stuck in 5.4.3.2 jailbreak version. What am I doing wrong? ![]() |

You are not following Amazon's directions on how to install one of their update files.
MrPI stands for: Mobileread Package Installer It does not install Amazon packages, only Mobileread packages. Put in visible root of USB storage, use "UYK" function. # 12 9 12 |

Hello.
I downloaded the initial firmware for PW2 (5.4.3.2) from the links. I copied it to main directory but whenever I plug out the device, it deletes the update.bin file, so Update Your Kindle is grayed out in the menu. How can I prevent this ? |
