The basis of the tension is .... religion. Imagine that. What a shocker! Last summer, when we went to visit them, my SO told them that he didn't believe in "God" and was an atheist. His mother is a devout catholic that just finished a theology course at a seminary. Out came the hysterics and how he just broke her heart, she can't take it, etc., etc., etc...then of course, since her son doesn't have a thought of his own, she says, "Oh... I know. You always were influenced by your girlfriends." Now you have just told your son that he can't think for himself. WTG

Suffocating on our own fluids with no one to help (other grandmother)

Languishing in a hospital bed for 2 years slowly dying of inoperable brain cancer that left you unable to walk or care for yourself (uncle)

Went to sleep after drinking a large mason jar of shine (no kidding other grandfather)

I know which one I would choose

Choosing our death would eliminate the need for Palliative care, who would wish for that death? There would be more happy people, and no nursing homes, we would all live the live we chose. More or less
I always say that I'm not particularly afraid of dying, I just sort of hope it's a surprise.

That is the one thing my husband and I would fight over: him coming from a leftish socialist setting and me from a strict calvinistic family. After a few years () we finally agreed not to mention religion again in our house.
BTW: I had and still have (93) a mother-in-law from those cartoons.........We managed to get along: after 26 years.

So perhaps there is hope. She would learn to respect our choices like we respect hers. Of course that would mean she would have to stop saying things like, "Am I offending you buy wearing a cross around my neck while in your house?" I guess she didn't hear me when I said that I would respect her choices and beliefs and hope that she would respect mine.

She is definitely one of those MILs, and his dad is the dad in the cartoons that looks around asking, "Huh? What? Who?" I suppose his survival tactics are to just block out most of what she yammers at him. LOL... it's kind of funny when I take myself out of the conversation.

Woke up from a dream about a giant rat. Damn. Anyway, religion is not a safe topic. My family and I always fight about it too. Ugh and when I told my sister I didnt really like going to church, she told me, "Oh so you're an atheist now." um no.

A friend's mother died recently. She was 100 years old, and in an assisted living facility. She had severe Alzheimer's disease. As my friend put it "She has her good days, and her good days. She has good days where she's in the present and aware of us, and she has good days when she's in that past with people she knew who have been dead for years. Either way, she's happy."

Being in an assisted living facility was a family decision. His parents were retired in Arizona, and his father (who is nearly as old as his mother) was attempting to care for her as her condition worsened, and was suffering under the strain.

The assisted living facility is within easy distance of he and his brother. Perhaps more important, it's just down the road from the hospital where his brother's wife is a surgeon. She's been the driver in evaluating what care his parents needed, and making sure the nursing home provided it.

It was the best possible solution for them. No matter how willing, neither he nor his brother and sister-and-law could have provided the care required.

I was really originally just referring to the people who dump their elderly in nursing homes as soon as they are able. My grandmother had alzheimers (sp) as well and died in her nineties (nobody asks what age anymore since it's rude, at least for us) and she spent the last of her days in the province, occasionally coming up to the city to see a doctor. She loved to travel and was still vey strong until she fell down a staircase.

What they don't realise is that "Christian" sympathy that they showed us when we had doubts is what confirmed that "away" was the right direction. I've never had an atheist try to drill their beliefs into me, only believers.

You do know what 'atheism' means, don't you? it means;

–noun
1. the doctrine or belief that there is no god.
2. disbelief in the existence of a supreme being or beings.

It does not mean that you don't have a belief in anything.

I believe in God. I've just stopped believing in the church. I believed some stupid things while I was in a religious school or rather, what they made us believe, like how yoga is satanism and Harry potter is evil
