The idea of sending our parents to nursing homes aren't popular here. I guess it's more common in the US? difference in cultures, once again. Though I wouldn't want to spend my last days in a nursing home either.

I prefer your country's way of handling older folk.

There's an old saying "A mother can look after five children; five children

cannot look after one mother."

yeah, that's sad. we're four siblings; i don't think anyone of us would feel good if we sent our parents to nursing homes. i guess in a way it would seem demeaning to them? i mean, my parents are as sharp as ever even at their age now, and even if they aren't, i think that between the 4 of us, we would work something out. we have to, or else we'd really feel as if we failed as children. i guess that's how we were raised; both my parents and their siblings took care of their own parents until the end, and both sets of my grandmothers died at home. it's not easy to take care of elderly folk; even my parents admitted that, but they would never trust someone else to take care of their own parents.

My parents have already decided on their "Retirement Home" they have told us over and over that they will not live with their kids

I think Nursing homes have improved in Canada, they are better than they used to be, here in Malaysia I wouldn't send a stray dog to the nursing homes here.

oh, i don't think my parents would want to live with any of us either, but they wouldn't want to go to a nursing home either. they'd just want to live in their home we live in a townhouse, so it's all good. once in a while we also send food to our elderly neighbor, whose sons have all deserted him (ungrateful SOBs, is what i'd call them.). he now regrets not having a daughter.

i decided to try the amazon live chat support thing...and it's been a very weird chat so far.

i really want to cry. i keep emailing amazon support because I JUST WANT AN ANSWER TO ONE STUPID QUESTION AND THEY KEEP TALKING IN CIRCLES. JUST ANSWER THE QUESTION.

and now i keep emailing back and I look like a lunatic. they probably think i'm super annoying now.

My father died suddenly and without warning when I was 17. When my mother got cancer, I tried to get her to live with my wife and I, but she didn't want to leave her home, so I moved with her (with the kind permission of my wife). I continued to care for her until my sisters came in from another state and convinced me that she would probably feel more comfortable with a female caretaker, and one of them took her home to live out her days with her. In our family, it was never a case of who had to take care of our mother. It was a case of who got to cake care of her.

Likewise, when my mother-in-law got Alzheimer's, my wife would take her to our house every day to care for her, while her brother would take care of her in the evenings.

I can't fault those who seek recourse to a nursing home, for I haven't lived in their shoes, and I know there are things that nursing homes can provide that private caretakers can't. I'm just saying that's how we've always done things in our family.

What the heck do I know about cars?...
...I'm not happy about this... I don't like cars. I don't like car salesmen. I don't like car dealerships. There are waaaaay too many different brands, styles, sizes, shapes.... Then we have to deal with finding a place to park it so she CAN buy it.
When I started dating my SO he had a car that was leaking oil all over my driveway, so I asked him if he was planning on getting it fixed. He told me that when he bought the car it was only supposed to be until he got around to finding a good car. That was 1.5 yrs before. He feels the same way as you about buying cars.

So I told him that I have always had great luck at buying used cars. There's a weird intuition thing that I have going on, and when it comes to cars it's amazingly on point. So after 1 month of dating he gave me the go ahead to find him a car.

I told him I needed parameters because the choices are too vast. We narrowed down what he wanted and up to what price he was willing to go. I had a feeling we were going to be together a long time, and I have only owned manual transmissions, so it would be good if he knew how to drive my car. I asked him how he felt about it. He said, "I can't drive one. I said, "You can learn." He replied, "I could." So... after dating for one month, I went off to spend his money on a car that he didn't know how to drive.

That's when he also found out that I like a bargain, and to not pay a penny more for something that won't make me any happier, so I found him a car that he would love for half the price that he was willing to spend. That was probably the moment he fell in love. When we picked it up, he had a few hours to learn how to drive a stick before he had to drive, the next day, in downtown Miami. That was when he wanted to kill me.

The next night, happy that he made it through the day, I asked him how it went. He said that he LOVED it! Driving a stick shift made him feel like he was in a race! From that point on, he has never looked back, and like my other used car purchases, the car is rock solid and runs great.

My future in-laws are in town right now. They arrived on Friday evening, and by Saturday afternoon, my future mother in law had already started instigating and trying to get on my nerves. I tolerated her until Sunday afternoon, when she succeeded. I couldn't wait for her to leave on Monday afternoon. They're still in town, but not staying with us, they're staying right on the beach at a resort hotel for a few days. I don't know who's idea it was for them to only stay w/ us for 3 nights, but it was brilliant!

It seems the men in the family can deal w/ her a little better than the women, which is why if she wants to get a message to her own daughter, she calls or emails her son in law, because her daughter won't pick up the phone. Ironically, as I was typing this, she called (I didn't pick up) to ask "what time" my SO and I were going to meet them on the beach for dinner and a walk. Ugh!
