Hi,

Just got a new Kindle Voyage with 5.8.2.1 on it. I have a few questions before Jailbreaking it.

1. How important is it to get rid of Special offers? I'd rather not spend the $20.

2. If I do get rid of Special Offers, I have to let the Voyage connect to Amazon. But won't that trigger an automatic update to 5.8.8 which will make it impossible to Jailbreak? How do I prevent the automatic update?

3. If I don't get rid of Special Offers, then I assume I just plug into USB, copy over the 5.5.0 firmware, and update in Airplane mode?

Thanks for help, I don't want to screw this up.

1) A subjective question.
How important is it to not waste the purchase price of the Kindle Voyage?
If something goes wrong during the procedure, you will not be able to recover from the error if Special Offers is enabled. If you can follow directions exactly, nothing will go wrong.

2) Read second bullet of Step 7 to create the OTA blocker directory in your special case.

3) No. You must follow all of the directions (other than doing the second bullet of Step 7 NOW because of 5.8.8 and your SO status) in order, every one of them, completely and exactly. No exceptions (other than creating the blocker directory NOW).

If you are uncertain or uncomfortable, you should probably not be trying to modify your Kindle.

I had the wifi on my kindle (kt3) turned off for a weak, I turned it on again to download a book from amazon it downloaded ok but then the kindle restarted and the screensaver hack I had wasnt working anymore, I checked the firmware version and it was now 5.8.8, it was 5.8.7 before.
Can someone please help me out?
(this probably is asked a lot and you guys are probably annoyed to answer the same question but I couldnt find the jailbreak FAQ)
I also want to thank you guys that made it possible for me to jailbreak my kindle, without you I couldnt .

Well, you have seen and read it already, although you may not have realized it.

Top post, second sentence.

This is a technical forum and technical people tend to be very (very, very, ... ) literal.
Translation of 2nd sentence:
The jail break survives the update to 5.8.8 (and everything not mentioned, does not survive the update). Only the jail break is mentioned, and that is the only thing that survives.

That is all there is to the Jail Break FAQ / FGA .

Another translation:
Entirely normal, re-install everything that is in a package with the name format of: update_*.bin plus anything else that seems broken.
(The "hotfix" is an exception, it IS the bridge code, and the bridge code does auto-reinstall itself when it auto-reinstalls the jailbreak. It is a "good" Kindle virus.)

I guess it could be said that you do not **install** a Kindle jail break, you **infect** the Kindle with our jail break.

My KT3 is still running the old firmware I had on it when I installed the OTA blocker directory described in Step #7 (hint).

I would have retired from activity here this year, if it hadn't been for this 5.8.8 slap in the face.

Although a "war" between one large, well paid, department of professionals vs. one person with over a half-century of computer science experience seems to be a bit of a mis-match.
I may have to just start taking advantage of some of their system design errors.

I just downgraded to 5.8 and then updated again to 5.8.7 . and slapped in that update blocker so it wont happen again.
(I dont want anything to do with 5.8.8)

Thanks for the info. I ended up removing Special Offers, because you are absolutely right, $20 versus $200 is a no brainer.

Now I've gone thru all the steps, but there's no /mrpackages directory on my kindle, so I can't use the Dummy test. The only thing I may have done wrong is that when I did Step 2, I didn't reset the Kindle.

Can I do the steps again, this time doing the reset? I'm currently at 5.5 firmware.

Do not panic, you are almost done.
Step #7 - Choose which customer firmware you want to use and install it same as any other Amazon update.
You MUST replace the firmware that is currently on your KV. That build was intended only to be used inside of the factory for production QA purposes.
Or in this case, to install the jailbreak.
Most of our things here will not work on the factory testing build, they are all intended only to work on the customer firmware builds.

And then:

Step #8 - Open the spoiler, that is where you install MrPI (which creates /mrpackages) and KUAL.
Note the special directions for the 8th generation devices (yours).

Do not press "Reset"
A very bad thing to do at this point.

If you update to 5.8.7 - then you will most likely only be able to use the booklet form of KUAL.
