I just listened to Wool by Hugh Howey. The audio book was a great way to re-read the story. Now I'll listen to Shift, then Dust. I was able to get them all cheaply via whisper-sync for voice with kindle unlimited.

Speaking of Wool, I've been looking for a good deal on the audiobook. Audible has two editions, both approximately the same length, but one is called an omnibus. One is 2 Bucks, the other is a lot more. What's the difference?

Currently listening to From a Changeling Star, written by Jeffrey Carver and read by MacLeod Andrews. I can't even remember why I bought this, and it's been in my TBL list for a couple of months, at least, but I'm quickly getting completely sucked in to it. I have no idea where he's going with this.

Next up will be the Audible edition of an old favourite -- Quarter Share, written by Nathan Lowell and read by Jeffrey Kafer. This is on pre-order, and should be available Tuesday. It's a favourite book and I've been waiting for the Audible version of it. (There is, or was, a free podcast version of it, read by the author, but my life just isn't set up for podcasts.)

I wasn't aware of a new version, but the author did a good job reading the original. It May have been distributed as a podacast, but aside from the credits, it was an audiobook, pure and simple, and can be download simply in its entirety without needing to deal with podcasts at all.

I don't believe it is any longer available -- the author had to kill the podcast version to allow for the Audible versions, but it might still be out there - I know he had a window. The real problem was he simply could no longer keep up with doing all the audio himself. From all the reviews I've seen, Nathan did a good job with the audio, and he's a natural storyteller. But still, I'll be glad to have his (and future ones) on Audible. First, it lets me plug more $$ in to the author to keep him eating and writing. Second, I'm hopeful that they'll end up being WhisperSync'd. And, finally, anything that keeps him moving forward on new works, rather than focusing on narrating the old stuff, is good.

Latest listen: Clare Mackintosh's I Let You Go, narrated by Nicola Barber and Steven Crossley.

You know how every thriller gets compared to Gone Girl and/or The Girl on the Train? I think this is one that belongs in their company. The author here pulls off more than one astonishing twist that I never saw coming, all the while playing strictly fair with the reader. After one twist, I was so flummoxed that actually went back to relisten to earlier passages to see how the author had set it up.

I strongly suggest that anyone planning on reading this one AVOID REVIEWS; you don't want to encounter any spoilers or get a sense of how the plot evolves.

The narrators are good, especially Steven Crossley. While her performance is fine, I initially didn't care for Nicola Barber's voice but then got used to it.

I highly recommend this one. Remember, keep away from the reviews!

That is a good question. The reason you show one for $2 could be that you already own the ebook.

The one I listened to was narrated by Amanda Sayle.

Now listening to Shift, narrated by Tim Reynolds.

Remembering why this is such a great series!

Looks like you're right. I don't remember getting the ebook, but, heck, i'm not going to argue.
I got the one by Sayle as well. Neither edition got very good reviews on the narration, particularly concerning character voices, but I have not yet judged for myself.

This will have to go up near the top of my TBR (L?) List.

Right now I'm in the in the middle of Zero Day by David Baldacci.
John Puller is so obviously "inspired" by Jack Reacher, it's a bit hard to believe this isn't just Lee Child's idea of "What if Reacher stayed in the Army, and was a nicer, more optimistic guy...."

I mean, come on, even the names, "Jack Reacher/John Puller?" What's next "Joe Grabber?" "James Armslength?"

Good story so far though. I kind of like this kinder, gentler, Reacher. Uh...Puller.

The only character voice I didn't like was Bernard. I didn't personally have issues with any of the others.

Hmmm....part of Reacher's "charm" is that he kicks ass and isn't nice about doing it.

Precisely! Though only to the bad guys. Which is why even a female can like it (I want him at my back!)

Just spent 20+ hours listening to Special Topics in Calamity Physics (because who can resist a title like that?) by Marisha Pessl. I don't quite know what to make of it--it's trying a little too hard to be brilliantly dazzling, it's pretentious and overstuffed ... and yet it's both compelling and fascinating, and I did enjoy it. I would have benefited from having a text copy to refer to; I frequently got lost in the flights of narrative and had to rewind to see what the heck the relevant point was. Also, the text version apparently included "visual aids."

I'm now eyeing Pessl's second book, Night Film, but I may try something short as a palate cleanser before I jump into that one.

After happily discovering that several Marian Babson books are newly available as audiobooks, I listened to Paws for Alarm, which I'd read years ago. I'd forgotten how charming and slyly funny this was--the perfect little (only about 5 hours) book to read between the two denser Marisha Pessl tomes, the second of which, Night Film, I have now started.

Night Film is wonderful so far, though I don't know where it's going. Whereas Special Topics felt like Pessl was determined to cram everything she could into her story, Night Film feels more low-key and suspenseful--and dark.

I'm listening to a couple of different books, depending on where I am and what I'm doing. My primary one is Double Share, by Nathan Lowell, and read by Nathan Lowell. This is a Podio podcast, and while the author is a perfectly good narrator, I really don't like the format as compared to Audible books. My podcast app on the iPhone keeps getting confused which is more than a little annoying. Plus the book is split up into 2 chapter chunks, which is also annoying. OTOH, I am enjoying listening to the book - it's an old favourite for me in print, even though it was originally an audio podcast, so now I'm hearing it in the original form.

Don't use a podcast app. Just put the files in an audiobook app like Smart or Listen (if iPhone allows you such freedom...). Works much better.
