Can someone explain to me the basics of how audible works? You pay a monthly subscription fee even if you never buy a single book? And then if you do buy a book you can't listen to it wherever, you have to listen to it on your computer? You don't actually own the book?

For example, I couldn't download the book, put it on my mp3 player and listen to it in my car on my commute or while traveling?

That monthly fee gets you one "free" book, 30% off additional books, and various sales.

You can transfer Audible books to numerous MP3 players. See their Device Center for a list of compatible devices.

Basically if you have a membership plan (you don't need a plan to buy books) you pay either $14.95/month for one credit or $22.95/month for two credits (or you can pay a little less by paying annually). In general each credit is good for one book, making a book cheaper than buying it for regular price. Membership also gives 30% off regular price for other books you might buy and there are member sales as well.

Books can be listened to on your computer or an Audible compatible device such as an iPod or some other MP3 players and there are apps for iOS, Windows Phone and Android...
http://www.audible.com/mt/Apps

I listen to them in my car to and from work almost every day.

The books are DRM'd so it's no quite the same as buying an MP3 download from somewhere and doing whatever with it (unless you make a DRM-free copy).

There is also Downpour (and a couple others?) that do DRM-free books, but don't have the selection that Audible has.

Thanks, that answers my question. I was hoping I could burn it to a CD to listen to in my car or just dump it on my mp3 player (which isn't an ipod.) Sounds like it's a lot like the kindle where you don't actually own your books, just "license" them. D:

Thanks! Sounds like audible isn't for me. I was hoping it was mp3s you could download and listen to wherever. (Like at work where I can't install software. ) They make it sound like it's so simple when it really isn't.

Depends. If you have a compatible device it's very simple. If not, then no.

<Sigh> You NEVER own someone else's intellectual property, you ALWAYS license it. It's not new, it's not an evil plot. Get used to the idea, get over it, move on.

Thanks for the info. I just went and looked, but I have no ipod, so I don't use itunes or else I'd have to buy Nero. I guess it's music in the car and ebooks for me. Thanks for the help!

What MP3 player do you own? I have several Sansa Clips (Clip+ and Clip Zip) and have no difficulty getting Audible books on them.

Archos. It's basically a glorified hard drive with player software. I can only root it to add software written specifically for it, I can't add external software.

You can get a 4GB Sansa Clip+ from Amazon for $30. It's quite small and supports Audible; not to mention numerous other formats. It also has an FM radio.

The Sansa Clips are highly recommended by MR members and used by quite a few of us.

Yep, if you want CD's and choose not to use iTunes (you don't need an iPod) to burn them or buy Nero and use that then no Audible books for you that way.

IIRC many Archos work with WMA DRM. If you have a public library that offers audiobook downloads (OverDrive does DRM'd WMA or MP3 depending) that might be an option for you.

Thanks! I'll look into that. I think I'm getting at least one Amazon gc for Christmas.

Hee! I don't think Apple is the evil empire or anything, but the one time I tried itunes, it tried to take over all my music and tell me where to put it and when I moved something, everything broke and it annoyed me so much I've avoided it ever since.

I know my library does do overdrive audio books, but I think my archos might be too old. I'll look into it though, thanks!
