Windows 10 - free upgrade to those with PC using Windows 7 or 8

Mine seems okay too. Off to bed now will try all the programs tomorrow. I have a few shortcuts with shields on so I guess they might be a problem but hopefully nothing major.

Seems like 10 doesn't necessarily respect privacy settings even when it lets users change them: http://arstechnica.com/information-t...-to-microsoft/

Probably just a matter of MS not really thinking through the privacy settings?

But between this, the forced updates and bricking my test laptop I'm staying on 7 for the foreseeable future.

One more important difference is you don't have to have automatic updates if you have Pro.

Does the SP3 use the same pen as the Surface 3? If it is there are 2 different batteries. One covers the top button and the other covers the 2 buttons on the shaft. If so you can safely remove the top one and still have the rest of the functions. I noticed that because at the time I got the Surface I didn't use OneNote and it seemed like a pain. I've since starting using OneNote, but the desktop not the metro version so it's still of no help to me .

Glad to hear it worked okay. Took me 3 goes to finally successfully upgrade.

I'm only testing my more exotic requirements as the need for them comes up, but so far the only thing that isn't working in 10 (that was working in 8.1) is my ShuttleXpress editing controller. Hopefully a fix will be forthcoming and there is at least a workaround for now.

I've not upgraded by main laptop from Windows 7 to Windows 10 yet, but when I look in my Windows Update history, every day I see two messages:

Upgrade to Windows 10 Home: Failed

When I double click to see the details I see:

Error Details: Code 80240020

Looking this up revealed the following at Microsoft's forums:

This is an expected message indicating that when installation begins it may require user interaction. This is the largest software upgrade event ever and we’re managing it so everyone has a great experience. We recommend waiting until your PC receives a notification to upgrade, and then following the instructions provided.

Please note that there is no problem with your reservation or upgrade download. The upgrade download is not corrupt as some have stated, and you will be notified in the coming days or weeks when your device is ready to upgrade.

So it's an expected error, but still a bit of a nuisance having it there twice every day when I won't be upgrading this laptop for a while.

Not sure if it's the same pen but there are different batteries in it too - one AAAA in the body and two 319 button type near the top. Are the 319 *just* for the top button click(s) then? I don't think anyone who has OneNote desktop wants to ever see the Metro version (or Modern? or is it now called Universal? ) so I hope they fix that soon.

Edit: looked on MS site and yes it's the same pen for the S3 and SP3.

I got that too and I never reserved W10 for my laptop. In the end I upgraded last night using the media stick I created for my Surface, so far everything is working perfectly.

Right and that's what we've been discussing here (at least early on ). You can either remove the 'auto-upgrade' following the directions that have been given (i.e. remove the windows 20 auto-upgrade icon and action) or just let it keep trying. I got sick of seeing it fail several times a day and did the Media Creation Tool thing and installed it.

You can do the same....create the media and install later or just wait on even creating the media, but you'll have to either remove the Windows 10 Icon/update process or just let it keep trying....some say it eventually succeeds.....


As far as my Notifications Quiet Hours issue -- I think they may have fixed it in the most recent Win10 Update.....my desktop came up normally today with notifictions on (i.e. quiet hours were not turned on).
