Why is hippopotomonstrosesquippedaliophobia such a long word if it means a fear of long words?

Why does it mean that? Isn’t sesquipedalian long winded (or a foot and half long)? And doesn’t hippopotamonstro sound made up (not by you David)? Isn’t English wonderful?

Doesn’t sesquipedalian also mean 60 legged? Or would that be sesquipod?
(I remember a robust discussion with my father 40 years ago about this)
