I like that you'd own the book, so it's not a subscription service like Kindle Unlimited. However, $9.99 per year is not "free"

Not Free and no examples of what the freebies are. I'd proceed with caution. Smashwords doesn't have many big name authors so I can't see it being worth it.

Today's free book is Refuge by Karen Lynch, the second in her Relentless series, the first is permafree. GR 4.51 with >10,000 ratings. Appears to be UF/Romance. Current price is $4.99 although it has been 99 cents according to ereaderiq.
