I went to supermarket today. After I'd finally done the shopping, I made my way through the crowd to the parking lot, walked all the long long long way to my motorbike and found that my helmet was lost

I felt uneasy to ride without helmet, so I decided to get back into the supermaket to get another one. One more time I had to walk back to the entrance from the parking lot, push through a sea of people (today is Saturday!) and a labyrinth of stores on the ground floor to get to the elevator to go upstairs, try to find an empty locker to put what I had bought into, enter the multi-items area, search for a helmet similar to the one I had had (but I couldn't find one so I had to pick up a red helmet with white stripes), pay for it, get back to the locker to get my items, come for the elevator, push myself through the maze of stores downstairs, make it to the entrance, walk through the huge parking lot to my motorbike...

and the most irritating part? yes, now I'm home, I realize that I forgot to buy new tea!

oh I HATE shopping!

P.S.: the day after tomorrow is Valentine's huh? almost forgot it. the chocolate shelf in the supermaket was crowded with couples. I feel like I'm the only single one on earth.

I also do alot of origami. My partner and I have both done the 1000 cranes the last 2 years in a row. The tradition behind the practice is interesting. Your flowers look lovely.

My current desktop computer is left on 24/7 and is now about eight years old. I changed the motherboard about four years ago, but that was less than $100 USD. I do have some extra fans mounted inside the cabinet to reduce heat, but other than the occasional attack from malware, I don't have problems with it. (touch wood) I've been doing this 24/7 with computers for the past two computers and only upgrade when there is some really great new hardware that I 'really must have.'

Of course, your gain in computer life span is completely consumed by the amount of electricity you've wasted.

Nah. My new laptop has 3 times the RAM and twice the CPU cores (faster, too) and it's still slower than my 5 year old laptop, Pentium-M 1.7G with 1GB RAM.

Windows don't open as fast. I can't run as many programs at one time. I have to force restart about once a week because it gets abysmally slow. And then there are the periodic pauses as the laptop tries to catch up to itself. I've seen apps freeze that could run quite nicely on a 200MHz CPU. W. T. F. ?

There seems to be something wrong with your new laptop. I installed Win 7 on an original Win XP laptop and I'm quite satisfied. I can't really say if it's faster, but it's not visibly slower and multitasking works as good as before...

Don't know that your issue is, but you are wrong. All it takes is a review of the results out there.

Not quite sure what your issue is, but you virtually always object to anything I say. I was was tired of it before and it hasn't changed.

You likely have a problem with your particular computer because I'm using win7 on three different machines High end to low end and they all work perfectly. I'd say it's time for you to get a new machine or figure out what's wrong with it.

It's a 2 month old Dell with a standard Win7 install. I'm still in the middle of identifying background process I can safely delete.

I have to agree with Kenny on this one too, if you believe your 5 year old laptop with a slower processor and less ram, I have a 26 year old 80286/6MHz "Turbo" that you'll want to buy. Seriously, I think you may have an issue with your machine somewhere.

Personally I preferred the look and feel of Windows XP. I know I'm an anachronism, I still have and use a G3/300 "Babies first Mac" Clamshell iBook

never liked my preinstalled XP on the notebook. It felt... odd, and slow. After a few yeast I had enough and formatted C: installing a fresh XP Pro. It was a huge improvement, although it shouldn't have been.

Dollar-wise, perhaps. Usage-wise, not even close. I never have to wait for boot-up so when I want information, it's right there waiting for me instantly. To me, that is far more important than the few extra pennies it might cost keeping it on. (Though I do re-boot at non-critical times.) I want a computer to be a handy-to-use tool, rather than a pain in the butt.

Having no down time for repairs is another mark on the plus side. The avoidance of usual computer frustration is worth any price to me! I no longer have to call it 'damn computer!'

Speaking of rebooting etc, I must say that I'm utterly impressed with Ubuntu 10.10 on my netbook and workstations, being able to go into hibernate within a couple of seconds and restore in 3~5 seconds, including restablishing secure-wifi, finally I can now shut down my machine (well nearly shut down). The power saving isn't that great, since the workstation is only a 20W Asus B202 (the LCD consumes 55W !!) and of course the netbooks aren't much worse.

The jackass stoner next door is out of jail/rehab and moved back in. You know, the one who we are pretty sure robbed us last March and stole my laptop and all of my ebooks. He just had the nerve to ask if he could come in and charge "his" computer because "he can't find the cord."

That's because he forgot to steal the charging cord!

I told him that nothing he says can convince me that he wasn't holding my stolen computer, and to never come into my yard again.
