Note: a couple hours ago I check the problem file in kindle previewer and it displayed, as it does on my device, with just the two chapters showing. I closed and deleted the kfx file. I just tried converting the epub to KFX again, it, to get a screenshot, and this time the previewer complained that the file extension was incorrect. It's .kfx. I haven't done anything that should have caused that - I left the computer alone before coming back to post this plea for help. So, what may be going on there?

I would open the ePub with calibre Edit and check for problems. You can also see what the ToC looks like there and edit it as needed, before conversion.

That is a good point. I assumed that the table of contents was verified as being correct in the source file before conversion.

The conversion process is very picky about the table of contents entries being in the same order as the contents of the book.

You can add the TOC tool to the Menubar. This appears to be the same as in the editor, just that is all it does.

Since the error is coming from the Kindle Previewer program, the only suggestion I have is to try updating.

Very interesting for me but I simply change the language of the computer to English and suddenly it worked. If anyone gets similiar problem, this method might work.

You might mention what Language you changed FROM.

BTW Calibre also has a Language Override:
Preferences: Look&Feel: Main Interface: Choose Language (a pull-down)

You might put the computer back the way it was and see if the Calibre setting works.
Those steps might help the debugging folk

I was supposed to be subscribed to this thread so I'd see any replies quickly. I didn't get any notifications.

THanks to jhowell and tomsen for your help. The book was fine in epub. I've tweaked the ToC in the epub (flattened it), and tried converting again and got a brand new error! Screenshot attached.

This is well beyond my knowledge of how to handle. As it is, for now I'm falling back on AZW3 so I can read the thing, but if anyone has insight on how to fix this latest for the next time I see it, I'd appreciate it.

Amazon's Kindle Previewer performs most of the work in converting from EPUB to KFX. That software is very picky about the table of contents. The order of entries in the TOC must match the order of content within the book and the nesting of entries is significant.

It appears that in tweaking the TOC you inadvertently broke one of Amazon's rules leading to the book being rejected.
