What honorific does the military use for women these days? Maam? That (to me) doesn't carry the right feeling. Anybody?

In the Marine Corps it was always maam for me. I'm pretty sure it was the same for the other branches as well.

Yep, it's ma'am in the Army. Our last two (maybe three?) post commanders were women, and they were definitely ma'amed all the time.

Yes, today it's ma'am (contractualized Madam) in all US services, but in the sixties when the only female officers were nurses, it was officially “sir”, since the regulations had not been unisexed yet .

I’ve heard of unfortunate seamen getting into deep kimchee for calling his nurse “sir”!

Unfortunately, I'm inclined to agree with you. All the pretty women seem to flock around the gay men. There must be a good reason for it. I was tempted to march in the Gay Rights Parade just to increase my chances for getting a Saturday night date!

That, Marc m'dear, is because gay men tell us the truth about how we look and make us love it - and love them for it. No idea how y'all do it. But if I can't have Chris with me, I'd rather go clothes shopping with my gay buddy than any woman I know, because I'll come home with something I might not have picked out on my own or with another woman but it will fit right and it will look amazing on me.
