EMusic's free download of the day (Tuesday) has been posted, but at the present time there is the common glitch that occurs when you click to download--it doesn't download.

I can't even preview, at least on eMusic, as far as I'm aware, the new song. I'll check back later in the day. EMusic is usually good about correcting this glitch. Why they don't get it right at the beginning many times, I don't know.

Smooth. That's the best one-word description that I can think of for the Edvard Grieg piece that is YourClassical's free download of the day (that may be a characteristic of all or most of Grieg's pieces--I am not a good enough student (yet) of classical music to know).

The piece is entitled The First Meeting. It (the piece, not the meeting. ha) runs 3 minutes, 59 seconds long. The orchestra performing the piece is Capella Istropolitana, under the direction of conductor Adrian Leaper.

The Naxos album (2-CD set) The Very Best of Grieg is the source of the piece. YourClassical links to a dedicated webpage from Naxos for the album. Here's the URL.

The free piece is formatted in MP3, as usual. You may download it from this webpage. Look for the "Direct MP3 download link" link, and click on it. The download should begin immediately. Just interested in streaming the piece? There is also a stream bar at that same webpage, that you can use to stream the piece to your heart's content.

Should you find the sentiment of Grieg's piece too syrupy, you might try finding a copy of Floyd Cramer's old piano hit Last Date. ha

Alexander Street subscribers, check your email for information about a new posting that they just made of four free classical pieces. Alternately, if you are a subscriber, just navigate to this webpage. If you do not see a blue "Download" button superimposed over the photograph of Brahms, that probably means that you will have to log in. Then return to the webpage.

Those instructions assume that you are interested in this biweekly offering. It is Symphony No. 2 by Johannes Brahms. The four recordings making up the symphony are performed by the Orchestre National Bordeaux Aquitane, under the direction of Alain Lombard.

Once you've clicked on the blue "Download" button, you should get a webpage with a light aqua blue box in the upper righthand corner. There are links (they're light blue in color) to the four pieces are inside that box. For your convenience, here are the free pieces:
I. Allegro non troppo
II. Adagio non troppo
III. Allegretto grazioso
IV. Allegro con spirito

Right click "save link as," or something similar (depending upon your web browser) to save them to your MP3 listening device of choice.

I haven't had time yet to review the four pieces. If I am able to later, I will make a follow up post.

Yes, today is the day that I call "Super Tuesday"--all of the free classical music sites that I track make a post on or near this day.

Classical-music.com's has just been posted. It is from Renaissance composer Jean Richafort: 'O quam dulcis'. A group called "ORA" performs, under the direction of conductor Suzi Digby.

'The ORA singers' thoughtful, introspective phrasing distils a sense of spirituality difficult to communicate on record,' write Terry Blain. 'The choir give a sentient, immaculately balanced interpretation.'

The disc received a four-star rating in February's BBC Music Magazine.

Richafort is another composer with whom I am not familiar (not a surprise).

Classical-music.com, unlike some other free classical music websites, does require that you be a subscriber and does require that you are logged in, in order to download their freebies. So, you might as well start here (assuming that you are already a subscriber, if not there is a link on the webpage to a webpage where you can subscribe), by logging in.

Once you are logged in, navigate to this webpage. If you are, in fact, logged in, you should see a bright red "Download Now" button superimposed over the thumbnail of the cover of the album from which today's free piece is taken.

Again, I haven't had time yet to review the free piece. If I am able to later, I will make a follow up post. I do know that it is a religious choir piece from the Renaissance. I have opened the piece in my MP3 player. It gives the name of the group performing (ORA), the name of the song (O quam dulcis) and "Refuge from the Flames, Miserere and the Savonarola Legacy". The last statement is extremely interesting. If you do not know about Savonarola, I encourage you to read Wikipedia's article about him!

I had narrowed down the changeover time for EMusic's free download of the day to between 12 midnight and 1 a.m. EST. More and more it looked like it changed over consistently at 12 midnight, give or take a few minutes. Well, I just now checked (at about 12:04 a.m.) and it had already changed over for the day (Wednesday). Perhaps they queue their daily free downloads and the changeover happens automatically. If so, that's a good thing about their system.

However, at this moment, the eMusic download is experiencing the same problem as it seems happens every day with them--when you click on "Download free track," nothing seems to happen, you certainly don't get the download. They have been good recently about fixing that problem as the day wears on. Maybe the tracks are queued, but it takes a real, live person to come into the office at eMusic to turn on something each day to get the download to work. I dunno, that's just a guess.

That prompts this question: why don't they just make the changeover and fix the download problem all at one time? It seems like a good time for that would be after the real, live person comes into the office each day.

I see no point in checking eMusic early in the morning like I have been, only to find that the download doesn't work. Here's my new policy, effective immediately: I'll check eMusic much later in the day, when likely everything will be working. Unfortunately, that means a narrower window for peeps to get the free download.

YourClassical's free MP3 of the day is a piece by Gioachino Rossini, La Siege De Corinthe: Overture.

The rendition that we can get free is the one taken from the Naxos album Rossini - Complete Overtures - 1 - The Thieving Magpie [the photo of a magpie on the album cover is a real eye-catcher, G] - Semiramide - Otello.

As far as credits are concerned for the piece that we can get free from the album, Prague Sinfonia Orchestra performs, and Christian Benda conducts. You can find out much more about the entire album, by pointing your web browser to this URL, where there is a dedicated Naxos webpage for the entire album, along with some interesting information about Rossini and, well, several other cool things.

By the way, have you noticed how long it is taking the Naxos dedicated webpages for albums to load lately? I wonder if that might be because of how far they have to travel over the Internet from Hong Kong to get to here. But I digress.

This rendition of La Siege De Corinthe: Overture is 9 minutes, 31 seconds long. Stream it and/or download it from this webpage. To download it, click on "Direct MP3 download link."

My opinion of the piece? After the first couple of minutes or so, I think that it sounds great. I don't like the way that the piece begins. But, that's what we have tools like Audacity for, is to fix those kinds of things, right?

The folks at YourClassical, or one of the organizations affiliated with them in the daily giveaway program, have chosen a rendition of Frederic Chopin's Impromptu No. 2 to be YourClassical's free download of the day.

Although the rendition is taken from an Oehms Classics album, a webpage with information about the entire album is provided by Naxos Records, and is located here. I'll advise you, again, that this type of Naxos webpage is loading very slowly lately (it's giving me some very unpleasant flashbacks to the old dial-up days. ha).

It appears that all pieces on the album, Frederic Chopin - 4 Ballades - 4 Impromptus, are performed by Amir Katz on the piano.

Our free piece is formatted in MP3, and the YourClassical dedicated webpage for the freebie gives the length of it as 5 minutes, 54 seconds.

To take a listen to the free piece and see what you think about it, there is a streaming function provided on the dedicated YourClassical webpage for the free piece, that I mentioned above. Wanna live dangerously and download the piece without listening to it first? Then, you can do that from the same webpage, by clicking on the "Direct MP3 download link."

I'm generally not a fan of piano music, especially for classical music, but I found this one to be pleasant. And, it truly is amazing that it was all done impromptu.

See you tomorrow, for the final download of the day for the week, from YourClassical.
