2MB text is quite a lot. Even if you find EPUB that size, inside they are usually split into many smaller files. And even most regular book EPUB are smaller than 1M.
That said, if this is a hard coded limit inside nickel or adobe somewhere, in theory it might be possible to patch it. Finding the correct place to patch might be a challenge, though. |

I can't help but wonder if this limit might be related to available RAM on the device.

512MB RAM should be plenty, (although it probably applies the same rules on Kobos that only have 256M)
It could be disabled for no other reason that no one expected a genuine text file of this size. If you create a 100MB .txt file and try to load it into a regular editor, that will usually slow down considerably as well. So a limit might not be wrong but which limit do you pick? Depending on how it calculates pagination that could be very expensive for a large file... |

Latest I had an epub with only the cover more then 1 mb.. So one with 2 mb is terrible wrong but there will be epubs that have them so.. But I have pdf files much larger, so is the limit there only for txt?

After my tests, I found the following in the syslog:
Aug 9 18:56:31 nickel: void SyncFileSystemCommand::parseTextDocument(const QString&) Text file is too big to parse: "/mnt/onboard/test.txt" That happened while processing the books. The file was about 7MB. It wasn't actually a book, but a log file I had from somewhere. There was a similar entry for each of the text files over 2MB in size. I don't know what parsing it is trying to do. I have always assumed it didn't look at the contents of text files. The only thing I can think of is that it is checking that there are no bad characters that will cause problems later. Or it is looking for markdown or something similar to parse for the TOC. I'll soon be able to test the new Kobo ereader. I bought one yesterday but wasn't too confident in trying to set it up by myself as described here without coyping the SD card. Since I don't have a Windows computer nor a WIFI access, and apparently can't do much without either one, I'll stop by my parents'.
I can't wait ![]() |

![]() I've tried to connect at work but I can't get past the login/password needed to access WIFI. I can't really do tethering with my next to nothing data plan (I have 10M left to use until October 10th) ![]() Tonight I'll see my parents, have a nice time with them and set up the Glo HD. After that it will be as usual: download a bunch of books, manage with Calibre when needed and sync each time I'm at my parents' or at a local organization whre I'm a volunteer ![]() To stay on topic, I'd like to add that I think the Glo HD bezel has quite a classy feeling to it ![]() |

Must say its very confusing, been reading the last 20 pages and im still not decided whether to get the device or go for the previous model due to reflection, having to brake the device and possibly jeopardize it for the sake of upgrading memory etc..

The glare around the edge of the Kobo Glo HD doesn't bother me in the least. Everyone will have their own reaction. (Personally I am far more bothered by the shine of the bezel around the Aura - and the Kindle Voyage - and my tablets - and had to shell out for skins to cover them).
There is no real need, IMO, to open the device and upgrade the memory. If you need to store more books than the device will hold, my advice is to get a second device. |

The storage, I don't eaxctly understand this.. when 4 gig is not enough then on a later time, 8 will not be either.. it is simple to add more books by using a dropbox or other storage site to add books, i would take 2, one with already read books and one with still to read books.. And (or but) it is really simple to make the storage bigger by making the books smaller... why using a almost full HD cover with sizes bigger then you can ever display, in full color taking almost 1MB for only the cover, with fonts in it,for every book the same fonts in the book itself. You can gain enormously amount of space by replacing the covers by 16 shades of grey (oops.. not that book..)ones in a 1440x1072 resolution. The device can't do more so everything will be rendered back to those dimentions. And why keeping all the fonts in the books when you simply can add them once to the font directory and remove them from the book itself. Why keep 20 books with, lets say the "bookerly font" when it is so simple to add it once to the font directory and remove them out of the book itself, the result stays the same but I have reduced books from almost 2 MB to 300 KB without changing the look of the book itself, make it possible to almost put 7 books on the device where now only 1 fits.. If you calculate that factor 7 back to the internal 4 GB, you can store up to 28 GB of books on that same 4 GB .... |

get one of the models that as an sd card slot, why kobo did away with it on the Glo HD is a mystery to me, after all it was one of the best advantages that it had over the amazon kindle range. best wishes koboy ![]() Last edited by koboy; 10-12-2015 at 01:53 PM. |
