I was just looking through the books that are going to be released tomorrow and found a free version of Mrs. Zant and the Ghost (1hr 40min; read by Gillian Anderson)

Audible has a freebie up for pre-order. You can get "Mrs. Zant and the Ghost" by Wilkie Collins here. It's due for release Wednesday (12-23) and is read by Gillian Anderson ("The X-Files"). I don't know how long it will last so if you're interested don't delay.

Mrs Zant has recently lost her beloved husband, and while walking in the Kensington Gardens, the spot where she and her deceased husband declared their love for each other, she feels his presence trying to warn her of some coming danger.

Mr Rayburn witnesses it all, and he'll have to fight his own incredulity regarding the supernatural and his gut feeling that the disturbed young woman is telling the truth.

There is a "David Aikman" who is a narrator.

Your piece of information led me to check Audible. This is one of six titles that they sell of which David Aikman is the narrator or author or both. They sell a Life of Our Lord: Written for His Children During the Years 1846 to 1849 that he narrates that must be the same audiobook as the freebie. That and further information about this audiobook is here.

The regular price is $9.09; it's a Whispersync title, though, so I'm "sure" that it would be cheaper as a Whispersync deal. Still, it's nice to get it free.

I knew that Dickens was an avowed Christian and was serious about his religion, but I didn't know that he did any writing that was so strongly religious.

ADDENDUM: Well, I checked and found that the Kindle is $11.07, so nix the idea of the Whispersync deal being cheaper. For what it's worth.

I got the information, including the link, secondhand. I do not recall ever coming across an email signup page for that offer.

Some Mobilereaders may recall posts that I've made in which I've stated that I have the direct link to an item (e.g., a pdf), but that I wouldn't give it out, because the organization wanted people to sign up for the newsletter (or whatever). I said that I would give the webpage where they could sign up for the newsletter (or whatever) and let the organization send the direct link to them. That's my policy.

I do that mainly for ethical reasons. These companies make these offers to accomplish specific objectives (e.g., build up their mailing lists). There may be some outlay of money on their part in order to give away that thing that they're giving away. They've certainly invested time and effort. Personally, I do not feel that it is ethical to try to bypass their requirementse or help other people do so.

However, if I learn of a direct link and am not aware of requirements that have been given to receive the offer, I don't see that it is my responsibility to be an investigator and scour the Internet or the organization's website trying to find out if there are any requirements. Some may disagree with me on that point, and I'm open to receiving kind, well-reasoned criticism of my position.

I didn't get an e-mail; I just followed your initial link, then backtracked to Oasis Audio because I wanted to get the narrator info and saw that they wanted people to sign up. Christianaudio.com just sent me an email telling me about this promotion.

Spend $10, get a $20 gift certificate. That amounts to getting up to 50% off of any of their products. You are allowed to gift them to yourself. And, I don't see anything stating that use of these is not allowed on sale items.

Apparently you can get as many of these deals as you want or can afford. The one caveat is that you can buy only one of these gift certificates per transaction, for some reason. So if you wish to buy multiple cards you will need to checkout multiple times.

There are no other major restrictions. But they do caution you that you must "have ONE $20 gift certificate and NO additional items in your cart for the $10 discount to be applied."

The offer ends Christmas Eve.

Some of us have discussed how difficult (if not impossible) it is to determine what audio you will get in certain Whispersync deals, in other words what audiobook companions go with particular Amazon ebooks. Those are ones where there is more than one audio of the book at Audible. For whatever reason, it seems like they almost always are classics.

This ebook is a case in point. There are four audiobooks of the title at Audible designated as "Whispersync for Voice-ready" but I can't tell which one goes with the edition of Anthony Trollope's The Last Chronicle of Barset: The Chronicles of Barsetshire whose webpage at Amazon is here.

The reason that I'd like to know is that the ebook has been reduced in price from the regular digital price of $7.14 to $0.99. The all-of-the-time price for the Whispersync audio companion is $3.49. So the total price of the Whispersync deal is a super $4.48.

The ebook is not (just) the plain public domain text. It is the Oxford Worlds Classics edition, edited by Helen Small. I don't know what other benefits that there might be, but I know that there are these listed in the table of contents:

While I don't know which audiobook corresponds to the ebook, I can tell you that the regular price of the audiobooks range in price from $16.95 to $36.74 and that the narrations range from about 30 to 35 hours in length.

3 of the 4 WS versions are $2.99. Only one of them is $3.49, so that is the one. I double checked it by clicking through from the Audible side as well. This is the winner.
