Please allow me to go ahead and put genres/subgenres to the titles on your list. If you don't like the way that one or more is categorized, feel free to change it/them--it won't hurt my feelings. At least people will have something to go by until you put down what you like.

Editorial comment: The subtitle of The Short and Tragic Life of Robert Pearce is subtitled, A Brilliant Young Man Who Left Newark for the Ivy League. To me, that sounds insulting to Newark and its people.

Does the publisher think that most Newarkers are too dumb to go to Ivy League schools? I have to wonder. Newarkers are human beings, and they are just as intelligent as other human beings.

Newark is a fine place (well, except for the International airport there, unless they've fixed the problems). For one thing, you can get a beautiful view at night of New York City from the Newark shore.

Realistically, most Newarkers, as with most people anywhere, are not going to end up at Yale. There's no point in denying the reality of where and how this young man lived and how he transcended his origins, because that's the story being told by his Yalie roommate. Newark isn't Saddle River, after all. Although I agree that the subtitle was rather tone-deaf.

This book has been on my radar since it came out, but I think I'd rather read it.

Yeah. I thought about the fact that all that the publisher may have wanted to imply is what you said. I hope so.

I would not recommend this to young kids as some of the scenes get pretty dark. If your older kid (12 and up) can handle the later Harry Potter Novels or the Hunger Games they may be able to handle this. That being said I found this a completely fun and wicked take on my beloved Oz. Turning Dorthy into a power hungry Stalin like figure was genius. The way she changed Oz from a happy go lucky place to a dystopian hell hole and had The Tin Man and The lion be here heavy's made my inner twisted side giggle with joy.

This is one I can highly recommend if you have any interest in how the promises made to the freed slaves was completely undermined by gutless politicians. I found it fascinating how much the comprises made by the North to the South in the years immediately following the Civil War led to Jim Crow and the rise of the KKK. There was so much potential to fulfill the promises implicit in America's founding documents to Black Americans that it was heart wrenching to see that it was tossed aside in the name of political expediency. It shows how very little things change over time.

Whispersync: no deals at this time | Audible

Stories from the LGBTQ community, gathered by StoryCorps and heard on NPR

StoryCorps OutLoud sets out across the country to record and preserve the stories of LGBT individuals along with their families and friends. OutLoud is a project undertaken in the memory of Isay's father, psychiatrist Dr. Richard Isay. Professionally credited for helping to persuade the mental-health community that homosexuality is not a mental disorder, Dr. Isay was himself a closeted gay man for many years. He came out to his son at the age of 52, and in 2011 he married his partner of 31 years, Gordon Harrell, before passing away suddenly from cancer on June 28, 2012.

On June 28, 2014, the 45th anniversary of the Stonewall uprising, StoryCorps inaugurated OutLoud, a three-year project to capture the experiences of LGBTQ people. In particular the project will seek stories from young people, minorities, and those who lived before the uprising, which was a response by gays to a police raid on the Stonewall Inn in Greenwich Village and helped precipitate the gay rights movement.

If You Could Be Mine

Whispersync: Audible ($3.99) | Kindle ($7.96)

17-year-old Sahar has been in love with her best friend, Nasrin, since they were six. They've shared stolen kisses and romantic promises. But Iran is a dangerous place for two girls in love - Sahar and Nasrin could be beaten, imprisoned, even executed if their relationship came to light.

So they carry on in secret - until Nasrin's parents announce that they've arranged for her marriage. Nasrin tries to persuade Sahar that they can go on as they have been, only now with new comforts provided by the decent, well-to-do doctor Nasrin will marry. But Sahar dreams of loving Nasrin exclusively - and openly.

Then Sahar discovers what seems like the perfect solution. In Iran, homosexuality may be a crime, but to be a man trapped in a woman's body is seen as nature's mistake, and sex reassignment is legal and accessible. As a man, Sahar could be the one to marry Nasrin. Sahar will never be able to love the one she wants, in the body she wants to be loved in, without risking her life. Is saving her love worth sacrificing her true self?

I'd rather read it, too.

I've always found it unfortunate the author didn't emphasize Peace's origins from the mean streets of Newark, NJ rather than (erroneously) assuming his book's mere mention of Newark would evoke facts such as these (source: Wikipedia: Newark, NJ: Crime):
  • In 1996, TIME magazine ranked Newark "The Most Dangerous City in the Nation."[276]
  • In 2010, Newark recorded 90 homicides.[7] March 2010 was the first calendar month since 1966 in which the city did not record a homicide.[8] Overall, there was a 6% increase in crime numbers over the previous year, including a rise in carjackings for the third straight year, with the 337 incidents raising concerns that the city was returning to its status as the "car theft capital of the world".[9] Along with the increase in crime, the Newark Police Department increased its recovery of illegally owned guns in 2011 to 696, up from 278 in 2010.[10]
  • In 2012, CNNMoney ranked Newark as the 6th most dangerous city in the United States based on numbers by FBI Crime in the United States 2011 report.[287]

$19.99 -- Mongrels -- Stephen Jones/ Chris Patton, et al --> 9.7 hrs/ R-4.4 --> fantasy

Quote:
Whispersync: Audible ($12.99) | Kindle ($12.99)

A spellbinding and darkly humorous coming-of-age story about an unusual boy whose family lives on the fringe of society and struggles to survive in a hostile world that shuns and fears them.

He was born an outsider, like the rest of his family. Poor yet resilient, he lives in the shadows with his aunt Libby and uncle Darren, folk who stubbornly make their way in a society that does not understand or want them. They are mongrels, mixed blood, neither this nor that.

The boy at the center of Mongrels must decide if he belongs on the road with his aunt and uncle or if he fits with the people on the other side of the tracks. For 10 years he and his family have lived a life of late-night exits and narrow escapes - always on the move across the South to stay one step ahead of the law. But the time is drawing near when Darren and Libby will finally know if their nephew is like them or not. And the close calls they've been running from for so long are catching up fast now. Everything is about to change.

A compelling and fascinating journey, Mongrels alternates between past and present to create an unforgettable portrait of a boy trying to understand his family and his place in a complex and unforgiving world. A smart and innovative story - funny, bloody, raw, and real - told in a rhythmic voice full of heart, Mongrels is a deeply moving, sometimes grisly novel that illuminates the challenges and tender joys of a life beyond the ordinary in a bold and imaginative new way.

Night Life --> Michael Cassidy Series (book 1 of 2)

Whispersync: Audible ($3.95) | Kindle ($9.99)

With a pulse-pounding murder plot and a protagonist caught between police and Mafia ties, Night Life is the first in a transporting historical crime fiction series set in 1950s New York City.

New York City, 1954. The Cold War is heating up, Senator Joe McCarthy is running a witch hunt for communists in America, the newly formed CIA is fighting a turf battle with the FBI to see who will be the primary United States intelligence agency, and the bodies of murdered young men are turning up all over the city.

Michael Cassidy has an unusual background for a New York cop. His father, a refugee from Eastern Europe, is a successful Broadway producer. His godfather is Frank Costello, a Mafia boss. Cassidy also has an unusual way of going about the business of being a cop - maybe that's why he threw a fellow officer out a third-story window of the Cortland Hotel.

Cassidy is assigned to the case of Alexander Ingram, a Broadway chorus dancer found tortured and dead in his apartment in Hell's Kitchen. Complications grow as other young men are murdered one after the other. And why are the FBI, the CIA, and the Mafia interested in the death of a Broadway gypsy?

Meanwhile a mysterious, beautiful woman moves into Cassidy's building in Greenwich Village. Is Dylan McCue a lover or an enemy? Cassidy is plagued by nightmares - dreams that sometimes become reality. And he has been dreaming that someone is coming to kill him.

Row for Freedom: Crossing an Ocean in Search of Hope

Whispersync: Audible ($9.79) | Kindle ($5.99)

"When you’re in the middle of the adventure, you just have to live it. When you’re on an expedition, you put your head down and battle through. Storytelling happens after the finish line... now that time has come [and] Julia can tell her story. The full story." (From the foreword by Bear Grylls.)

An incredible account of one woman’s record-breaking row across the Atlantic. Thirty-two-year-old Julia Immonen and four other women take on a challenge completed by fewer people than have climbed Mount Everest or gone into space: row 3000 miles, unaided, from the Canary Islands to Barbados. Row for Freedom chronicles that dramatic journey, detailing the grueling, peril-filled crossing, which broke two world records, as it weaves together Julia’s search for hope and purpose against a background of relationships scarred by violence. As Julia’s physical and emotional treks unfold, you also learn about the plight of the 30 million victims of the modern-day slave trade that serves as the motivation for her row. Be inspired by Julia’s self-discovery and her team’s triumph in one of the most formidable physical quests ever undertaken.

Heaven is for Real: A Little Boy's Astounding Story of His Trip to Heaven and Back

“Do you remember the hospital, Colton?” Sonja said. “Yes, mommy, I remember,” he said. “That’s where the angels sang to me.” When Colton Burpo made it through an emergency appendectomy, his family was overjoyed at his miraculous survival. What they weren’t expecting, though, was the story that emerged in the months that followed—a story as beautiful as it was extraordinary, detailing their little boy’s trip to heaven and back. Colton, not yet four years old, told his parents he left his body during the surgery–and authenticated that claim by describing exactly what his parents were doing in another part of the hospital while he was being operated on. He talked of visiting heaven and relayed stories told to him by people he met there whom he had never met in life, sharing events that happened even before he was born. He also astonished his parents with descriptions and obscure details about heaven that matched the Bible exactly, though he had not yet learned to read. With disarming innocence and the plainspoken boldness of a child, Colton tells of meeting long-departed family members. He describes Jesus, the angels, how “really, really big” God is, and how much God loves us. Retold by his father, but using Colton’s uniquely simple words, Heaven is for Real offers a glimpse of the world that awaits us, where as Colton says, “Nobody is old and nobody wears glasses.”

Soul Surfer: A True Story of Faith, Family, and Fighting to Get Back on the Board

US, Canada only

She lost her arm in a shark attack and nearly died, but she never lost her faith. Now a major motion picture, Soul Surfer is the moving story of Bethany Hamilton’s triumphant return to competitive surfing and has continued to be a beacon of inspiration to all who hear it. They say Bethany Hamilton has saltwater in her veins. How else could one explain the passion that drives her to surf? Or that nothing—not even the loss of her arm—could come between her and the waves? That Halloween morning in Kauai, Hawaii, Bethany responded to the shark’s stealth attack with the calm of a teenage girl with God on her side, resolutely pushing aside her pain and panic while being rescued and brought back to shore. “When can I surf again?” was the first thing Bethany asked after her emergency surgery, leaving no doubt that her spirit and determination were part of a greater story—a tale of personal empowerment and spiritual grit that shows the body is no more essential to surfing, perhaps even less so, than the soul.

Thunder Dog: The True Story of a Blind Man, His Guide Dog, and the Triumph of Trust at Ground Zero

Faith. Trust. Triumph.

"I trust Roselle with my life, every day. She trusts me to direct her. And today is no different, except the stakes are higher." —Michael Hingson.

First came the boom—the loud, deep, unapologetic bellow that seemed to erupt from the very core of the earth. Eerily, the majestic high-rise slowly leaned to the south. On the seventy-eighth floor of the World Trade Center’s north tower, no alarms sounded, and no one had information about what had happened at 8:46 a.m. on September 11, 2001— what should have been a normal workday for thousands of people. All that was known to the people inside was what they could see out the windows: smoke and fire and millions of pieces of burning paper and other debris falling through the air.

Blind since birth, Michael couldn’t see a thing, but he could hear the sounds of shattering glass, falling debris, and terrified people flooding around him and his guide dog, Roselle. However, Roselle sat calmly beside him. In that moment, Michael chose to trust Roselle’s judgment and not to panic. They are a team.

Thunder Dog allows you entry into the isolated, fume-filled chamber of stairwell B to experience survival through the eyes of a blind man and his beloved guide dog. Live each moment from the second a Boeing 767 hits the north tower, to the harrowing stairwell escape, to dodging death a second time as both towers fold into the earth.

It’s the 9/11 story that will forever change your spirit and your perspective. Thunder Dog illuminates Hingson’s lifelong determination to achieve parity in a sighted world, and how the rare trust between a man and his guide dog can inspire an unshakable faith in each one of us.
