I don't use this construction for charging if you about that, haha) I have a cheap 2-usb port 5V@1000ma noname travel adapter (not shown on photo), where I can always plug the device in.

Ummmm... given that Apple's charger is designed to work with equipment much older than the 2008 standard, I'm not sure how you can claim that.

Simple solution - Turn device OFF and connect it to ANY usb wall plug with the usb data cable you have already - and it will charge.

BTW - it's somewhat bemusing that after months of being away, people are still arguing about this.

The USB charging standard is relatively new (when we started this argument months ago I didn't even realize it existed) and the vast majority of existing USB equipment isn't going to be aware of it. As others noted long ago any charger designed for the new micro-USB charging standard is going to be fine, for older gear it's going to be hit or miss.

It could be worse - Sony could still be using the method they used in the older PRS-600 where I can charge from a PSP charger, but only if the PRS still has some charge. Once it goes dead, or it's completely off, I have to charge it from a computer.

I understand the civilised way to discuss things... and you manage to avoid understanding me... I couldn't give a damn about charging when off, I want to charge AND read at the same time, this requires correct conditions on data lines (D+ & D- shorted) and means that there are PSUs that don't work with the standard data cable if the PSU doesn't implement this condition... sorting them out was the whole purpose of this thread...

Oh yes, and this thread is related to 350/650 readers not 600s, they are different!

I just thought you need a very simple way to charge your device, man, but not a million of other advanced features. Believe me, inexperienced users don't care about how to shorten D+ and D-, they want straightforward solutions to charge from PSU and read from battery :-)

Hardly an advanced feature when every previous Sony eReader allowed recharge with barrel connector whilst reading... going to micro-USB only removed the easy option and requires either cable or PSU to have correct conditions... read whole thread and you will find discussions of this and USB specifications etc as others also wanted to charge and read... and as for "advanced" features, you were the one talking about cutting the data lines in your earlier post so I simply responded to that...

Not sure what the fuss is here?

I simply plug my micro-USB Blackberry mains charger into my 650 if I need to read and charge at the same time. I'm failing to see how a barrel connector is any more convenient than that?

Neither am I but prior to the x50 range, a barrel connector charged any Sony and many people already had them for things like PSPs. It's only recently that the micro-USB connector has become common and suits the x50s.

Not everyone uses a Blackberry or other micro-USB powered phone so the thread was started to let people know which PSUs would work as there are some that don't... the rest of this recent set of posts has finished as far as I'm concerned...

PRS-650 external charging operation

Hello,

I'm back on the track concerning that "problem"…
But first of all, Happy New Year to you all.

Device tested : PRS-650 purshased directly from SONY France way back in Nov 2010 ( I'm actuality abroad for awhile ).
PC : Windows 7 & Windows XP Pro.
Charger : Generic European USB : Input : 110 – 240 VAC – Output : 5 VDC – 500 mA
----------------------------------------------
1 – Charging the Ebook with the Sony provided cable and thru a standard USB PC port works fine :
USB connected msg and charging advice msg visible.

2 – Charging the Ebook with the Sony provided cable, but with D+ and D- signals neutralized, and thru a standard USB PC port does not work :
USB connected msg visible but NO charging advice msg; 30 sec. later, error msg related to charging failure.

3 - Charging the Ebook with an USB generic cable and thru a standard USB PC port works fine :
USB connected msg and charging advice msg visible.

4 - Charging the Ebook with an USB generic cable, but with D+ and D- signals neutralized, and thru a standard USB PC port does not work :
USB connected msg visible but NO charging advice msg; 30 sec later error msg related to charging failure.

5 - Charging the Ebook with the Sony provided cable and thru a generic charger USB port does not work :
USB connected msg visible but NO charging advice msg; 30 sec. later, error msg related to charging failure.

6 - Charging the Ebook with an USB generic cable and thru a generic charger USB port does not work :
USB connected msg visible but NO charging advice msg; 30 sec later error msg related to charging failure.

7 - Charging the Ebook with the Sony provided cable, but with D+ and D- signals neutralized, and thru a generic charger USB port does not work :
USB connected msg visible but NO charging advice msg; 30 sec. later, error msg related to charging failure.

8 - Charging the Ebook with an USB generic cable, but with D+ and D- signals neutralized, and thru a generic charger USB port does not work :
USB connected msg visible but NO charging advice msg; 30 sec later error msg related to charging failure.
-----------------------------------------------
So, based on the different readings and advices, I wonder if we don't face a software restriction there ( for the products sold overseas ) , since test points 2 and 4 really reveal that the signals D+ & D- are for some reason required, and even mandatory.
What I wasn't able to check so far, is testing with a mobile charger equipped with a micro USB connector.
So quid ?
Any idea ?

What do you mean by D+ and D- neutralised... disconnected or shorted together?
