Ignoring teletypes and other steam driven computing equipment, the first device I used specifically to read books instead of the paper variety was a Compaq iPAQ (a PDA).

Apparently, Sony Reader PRS-500 in Jan 2007 was not my first ebook reading device. It was PC, 386, Windows 3.11 in 1996. I have read The Mist by Stephen King (in Russian obviously). My apologizes Sony ![]() |

Bozhe Moi! Windows 3.11! That's going back a bit! I remember doing an IT course in the 90s on DOS-no Windows!

Oh the PCs we were on were OLD - no internet (it was 1994) and with 5 inch floppys! We had a game on it and if you pressed F12 it would turn into a fake spreadsheet so it looked like you were working!

The first device that I used for reading books was a 386 based PC clone to which I'd added a CD-ROM (NEC 1x device) in the late 1980's. I had a World Library CD and read a few titles.
The first device that I bought specifically to read ebooks was an HP 320LX in 1997. It was used extensively for the purpose for a number of years before being replaced by a sub-notebook running Win98 (NetBook sized thing from Fujitsu) followed by a Clie T-415 and then a UX-50 The UX-50 is still in use pending the arrival (any minute now ...) of a K3. |

Apart from teletypes and dumb terminals attached to mainframes (late 1970's) and PC's (early 1980's), the Palm III in 1998.

My first one was a Sharp Zaurus: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sharp_Zaurus
I read all of The Count of Monte Cristo on it. And came away with the realization that I will NEVER read a book again on such a small form-factor. I tried reading a book on my Sony XPeria X10 which does work fine but at the end of the day, the screen was so small (iPhone is smaller yet) that after being accustomed to E-ink and a CoolER/Nook, this was a prescription for pain. Back in the day though the Z was a cool little device...I saved a company presentation to the Navy with it once because I could hack into a wifi network and then use it to do some last-minute coding on some files needed for a presentation to Navy officials... |

Spoooky
I actually had nightmares about the Sony PRS-505 long before it even existed. In my prophetic dream, I had purchased on of the first 505 units to come off the line, and found it didn't work so well. The screen was too dark, so I had trouble reading it. If I tried reading under bright lights I got glare, and couldn't read. There were several functional problems, which Sony would not fix. Their service department tried to tell me to fix it myself. Their suggestions never worked. As the end of the warranty period drew near, I sent the unit off to Sony. They returned it...in the same package I had sent it to them in. They hadn't even opened the box, let alone repaired the unit. I began to feel like a fool for having spent so much on so useless a product. When I woke up, and told people my dream, they had no idea what I was talking about. Sony had never built anything like what I had described. No one had heard about it. That was 25 years ago. Then, one day, Sony built the damned thing, and I began hearing horror stories from friends who had bought them. I steered clear of the things...because of my old dream. I had paid attention to my dream, while my friends had not. I have also heard some good things from 505 owners. I wasn't about to tempt fate, though.
