renushan, If what you are trying to do is trim and reduce the page size of the Tamil books, and they are already in PDF, I think there was another thread with some utilities that might help you.

Screenshot for the Cybook Gen3

Here are a full 256-grayscale image (by Yours Truly) and its rendering on the Cybook Gen3.
PS: release sources soon (if at all), so that I can add Gen3 support myself. and maybe drag-n-drop too, as it would be useful

To release as open source i need to do a cleanout of the code (comments, some rewrite of the classes to allow multithreading and so on...).
Due to some personal issues I had no time to do this yet

For support of new devices just write the specs:
Exact available image size (in pixels)
Number of shades of gray

Well, being opensource doesn't imply perfectness or usefulness, but it's your call
As a license, personally I fancy the ISC license because it doesn't need a lawyer to understand.

Anyways... the Gen3's screen is 600x800, 4 levels, 91x122 mm, 166 dpi from specs.
The actual dithering can be somewhat seen in the previous attachment.

Well is not about making it perfect but more like: Is better to make it more flexible now that is small than later when will be a bigger tool .

I've started it a day I was playing with the itext libs, and this tool came out as a result. So it doesn't have a planned architecture (yet :P).

I'll take a look at that license but my problem is mainly the compatibility of some library that i use inside: the pdf component (itext) and the image processing classes.

yes like most of that type. But i was't meaning the "total resolution" but the resolution available to the pages (some is usually lost due to toolbars or just wasted space ecc...)

Has anyone else been having problems with JPEGs? I'm converting a manga that's been scanned with some horizontal and vertical images for the Sony Reader PRS500/505, and it crashes out with Exception:java.io.IOException: Unsupported Format on some images that it cannot thumbnail in the main GUI, either. The only difference I can tell between the ones it likes and the ones it does not (bearing in mind I know it's not a horizontal or splitter issue - the first one goes OK) is that the ones it will convert have 256 colours (ie 8bit colour depth) and the ones it won't have 16million (IE 24bit colour depth). Do I need to reduce the colour depth on ALL the ones it doesn't like, or is there a newer (or older, but ideally still with the split function) of JE Comics that does not have this issue? I'm using 0.8.3 rev 1.46. Need to know this soon, ideally - going on a long journey in 3 days and would like some manga to read on the train

If you can send me some of the jpeg that produce the crash i can check them to find the source of the problem.
What kind of virtual machine are you using?

It's definately because the JPGs are 24bit colour - I converted some down to 8bit and they work, now. I've attached one of the JPGs, in 24bit form.

I'm on Windows XP, SP2. I THINK I'm running Java 1.5, but I'm not 100% sure - is there a command or anything I can run to find out, and if it is could this be the source of the problem?

Unhappy

java -version
But I've already checked that also latest java release doesn't seem to support that specific file jpeg format, I'll search some alternative lib, but I don't think I can solve this problem in the short term.

One solution you can try is a batch processing of the files using a tool like irfanview.

Sorry

P.S.

java -version returns 1.5.0_01, thought so. Bit of a bummer on the JPG thing, but OK, that's fair enough. And yeah, Irfanview's converter option was what I used to get those files working - I've now got the full Azumanga Daioh set ready for the trip~ Thanks for this tool - unlike manga2book, JE-Comics actually puts the pages in the right order!

Great tool!

As Serpentium said though, a batchtool/command line function would be great...

I used imagmagick (mogifry) before, but i didn't get these good results at all!
