Haha, oh shush. What I should've said was "1000 pages and my reader is showing almost a full charge".

But remember that the battery status only refreshes when you power the device up, so if you never turn it off it will stay at 100% right up until the battery dies on you!

It sounds like you have achieved a dramatic improvement by leaving the device always on, so I hope I have similar luck

Totally true. My device was saying it was fully charged for a week (it was turned on all the time) and this morning it was frozen, so I had to recharge it. It lasted 8 days and minimum page turns (maybe 300).

Just received another email from their help desk - they are going to send me a new one. I have doubts though - it'll probably have the same battery life as my current one.

I seem to note that it takes a lot longer to update ("flip") the page with PDFs. I'm guessing that while it's flipping, processing and battery drain are underway. Going back and forth to menus seems to take a lot longer than an ePub page flip, too. So maybe the number of kiloflips per charge depends to some extent on what kind of page is being flipped.

Yep, I could believe that easily. It makes sense that it would take a lot more processor cycles to parse and prepare a PDF page then it would a simple epub.

Good point, I've kinda been ignoring PDF's entirely, and didn't really think about this when reading people report on battery life. Do people really use the Kobo for reading PDFs??

Judging from some of the posts/threads in this forum, yes, they try to! I knew when I bought the Kobo Reader that no 6" eInk device is suitable for reading PDFs (at least, not the vast majority of PDFs).

I do. A lot. I read articles from journals that I can only get access to online. Results vary widely from file to file, in terms of Kobo-sloth and readability. I sure hope reflow comes along one day.

I usually leave my kobo on and have often pulled it out of my bag to find that the menu button has been pushed and the menu is up. Does anyone know if the menu display somehow uses more power then a regular page display if it's been left up?

Update on my third charge: 3.5 hours charge time. 600 page turns. No power offs.

EDIT: I am upgrading my page turn count to 750. I realised that the ePub I am reading displays 2.5 screens of text per 'page', and I got to page 297 when it died.

Man, that sucks! My charge is getting worse, last time I had 950.

For the 4th charge I've left it over night, and will try powering down while at work, and overnight, and see if that helps.

Sadly, I'm getting into "time to return my Kobo" territory here. Has anyone who returned their device due to poor battery life gotten a second device that performed better?

You should definitely return it if that is all you are getting.

I am curious to see your results of turning it off when not in use. I would imagine that it uses more juice starting up than anything else it does. It seems reasonable to me that it would drain faster if you turned it off and on a few times a day. Then again that is just a guess.

On a side note, how many books do you have on it? Also, do you still have the original 100 free books on there?

About 10 books + the 100 free books.

If I don't see an improvement this charge I will return it I think. I figure powering down/up between use will drain the battery even faster, but who knows...

I got 1000 pages in the only time I decided to drain the battery down, 400 PDF pages and 600 ePub pages, and a lot of switching between two ePub books because my wife takes my Kobo whenever she can. lol. I don't find it a big problem because before this, my Kobo rarely went more than a day without being connected to a computer. It's not good to repeatedly drain down a battery completely anyway. Unless I'm backpacking in the middle of nowhere, I don't find this an issue. Maybe invest in a backpack with a built in solar charger or the new Power To Go things.
