Ok, as far as nook not being better for epub -- you can read epubs bought at B&N and Sony Store on nook, while you can't read B&N epubs on sony readers (and that is a fact). nook is better for epub, Sony PRS readers are worse for epub, go post there.

JSWolf -- a huge amount of the posts in this thread are made by you and they're all about the same. B&N never told you they're selling epub on the product pages. B&N never told you they're selling product which is compatible with anything beyond what's freaking explicitly listed on every single product page. Yes, you can't read B&N-bought ebooks on other devices. Get over it.

PS. nook rules all.

Pretty much. Big players wanted DRM as part of the standard. An open format that depends on a DRM scheme owned by a single entity is not an open format. I'm going to assume the authors were unable to get consensus on a single DRM system but were able to agree that a DRM scheme was necessary. So only framework for attaching DRM to the format was authored and the actual implementation was left up to the party wanting to add DRM.

Unfortunately it seems that the ePub renderer (adobe mobile reader sdk) on the nook is much more buggy at the moment than older versions on other devices. As i wrote in an earlier post, a lot of standard compliant ePubs can't be read on the nook at the moment. This is a serious issue and B&N has to fix it asap! Given such issues your statement "nook rules all" seems a little bit odd.

Perhaps stangri is basing his statement "nook rules all" on the basis of his or her experiences with the nook. Perhaps like me, stangri has not have had any issues with the ePub books loaded on the nook. I have tried many ePub books (over 300) from multiple sources and have yet to find one that does not work. Perhaps I am just lucky.

Do you really think such statements (nook is better for epub, Sony PRS readers are worse for epub, nook rules all) are helpful? The topic of this thread is counterproductive enough...

Part of the problem is that there is a lot of conflicting information out there and B&N is not doing anything to help stem the tide of confusion.

Show me one place on the B&N website that says any information on ePub that's needed for the customer to make a properly informed decision? Nobody has yet done so. What B&N has on their website is not going to help people (who do not know about this DRM stuff) to make a properly informed decision to buy or not to buy. That is the problem. If B&N had put something like "The ePub purchased here uses a different DRM then other stores" that would be OK.

It's because it was written for publishers, not consumers. To publishers, it's "one file fits all", regardless of the DRM scheme applied after the document is finalized.

Maybe if you ignore B&N's website... but just saying nobody has yet to link you to it doesn't make it true, check my previous posts where I even tell you how to get to it from any eBook page.

And this is a bit of a problem, this PR is from the Kobo folks, who tried to speak authoritatively about B&N, when they are wrong. Go forward a year or so, and they will probably be correct then, but it certainly isn't correct now.

Considering Kobo launched well after B&N launched the nook, I seriously doubt the AP PR that people are quoting is even from B&N, like you say.

But now that we have other groups stating things in contradiction to Adobe and B&N, they are not helping make this situation any clearer.

Which is precisely why B&N should be absolutely clear about what they are selling.
