If all the books of the USA Kindle store would be available, I would be interested, in spite of the Kindle DRM and the fact that there are probably better e-readers out there.
I have looked at some authors at Fictonwise and the European Kindle store. And most books that are USA-only at Fictionwise, are also not available at the European Kindle store. So why should I limit myself to the Amazon Kindle format, when that offers less choice then buying a Sony/Cybook/Bebook?
A missed chance by Amazon.

Uhmno. You can buy content from the Sony Store without requiring a linked reader!

The new Sony readers support ePub DRM, so you can buy books from different stores now.

I absolutely agree with you here. I jumped in the air this morning, ordered a Kindle, went to see the available books, got very quickly sober again and cancelled my order. I am sticking with Sony.

Er? No, I was pointing out that you don't need a Sony (or any stand-alone) reader to buy from the Sony Store!

This message needs to go to Amazon.com
Use the "kindle feedback" link.

They need to hear more like this so they'll know why people are canceling/not buying.

I did not know that. I misunderstood your posting.
But the original posting was about the readers being store dedicated readers. And Kindle DRM books are only available from Amazon, while ePub DRM books can be bought from different stores.

Same thing happened to me. The limitations of the international Kindle are staggering:

You still can order via Amazon US and copy via USB. You can access 100% of the books in the US store. No problem at all.
I was enthusiastic (and kind of disappointed, given my 2 Kindles with 4 and 3 months of age) too. Definitely genious from Amazon. Who would have expected? 100 countries! Wow!
BUT: It's a downsized Whispernet only. Just for downloading the books. No Wikipedia for example.
Downloading wirelessly would be convenient. But I can live with the USB mode, doing the same with Sony, CyBook, iRex...
But still: Respect, Amazon!

Why worry, Geertm? The 'inteational' Kindle only denies you 709,000 titles from its US store. N

I am afraid that this is not true. The only reason for the different stores are the geographical restrictions.
In the Kindle forum at Amazon (and the Kindle forum here at Mobileread) there are a lot of postings about the fact that since last weekend a lot of people with a Kindle outside the USA cannot buy books anymore, using the known workarounds. They get a warning about geographical restrictions.
It looks like Amazon has made the geographical restrictions much more difficult to circumvent, because of the international introduction of the Kindle.
